Background of the Study

The COVID-19 pandemic caused unprecedented disruptions to global healthcare systems, affecting health-seeking behavior and service utilization (World Health Organization [WHO], 2023). In Nigeria, the pandemic led to a decline in routine medical visits, increased reliance on self-medication, and delays in seeking care for chronic conditions due to fear of infection (Nigeria Centre for Disease Control [NCDC], 2024).

Nasarawa State, like other regions in Nigeria, experienced significant changes in healthcare-seeking behavior due to lockdown measures, misinformation, and economic challenges (Okonkwo & Yusuf, 2023). Many individuals avoided hospitals due to fear of contracting COVID-19, leading to late presentations of diseases and increased mortality from non-COVID-related illnesses (Adebayo et al., 2024).

This study aims to investigate how COVID-19 has impacted healthcare-seeking behavior in Nasarawa State, identifying key challenges and lessons for future public health preparedness.

Statement of the Problem

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted healthcare delivery, leading to delayed medical consultations, reduced hospital visits, and increased reliance on alternative medicine (Eze & Mohammed, 2024). In Nasarawa State, there is limited empirical data on how the pandemic influenced healthcare-seeking behavior, making it difficult to develop effective post-pandemic health strategies (Ibrahim & Usman, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess changes in healthcare-seeking behavior during and after the COVID-19 pandemic in Nasarawa State.

2. To identify factors influencing reduced healthcare utilization during the pandemic.

3. To provide recommendations for improving healthcare-seeking behavior in future health crises.

Research Questions

1. How did COVID-19 affect healthcare-seeking behavior in Nasarawa State?

2. What factors contributed to reduced healthcare utilization during the pandemic?

3. What strategies can improve healthcare-seeking behavior in future pandemics?

Research Hypotheses

1. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly reduced healthcare-seeking behavior in Nasarawa State.

2. Fear of infection and misinformation contributed to reduced healthcare utilization.

3. Post-pandemic health interventions can improve healthcare-seeking behavior.
