Background of the Study

Childhood obesity has become a significant public health concern globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The prevalence of childhood obesity has been rising steadily, contributing to an increase in obesity-related health complications such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases (Ng et al., 2023). In Nigeria, childhood obesity is increasingly recognized as a growing problem, and Kaduna State, located in northern Nigeria, is no exception. With urbanization, changes in dietary patterns, and a shift towards sedentary lifestyles, the incidence of childhood obesity has surged in the region (Aliyu & Bello, 2024).

Several factors contribute to childhood obesity, including genetic predispositions, dietary habits, physical inactivity, and socio-economic conditions. The consumption of energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods, such as fast foods and sugary beverages, combined with decreased physical activity due to urbanization and digital entertainment, plays a significant role in the development of obesity (Obi et al., 2023). Additionally, parental behaviors and attitudes towards food and exercise, as well as limited access to affordable healthy food options and safe play spaces, are critical risk factors (Eze et al., 2024).

The rising trend of childhood obesity in Kaduna State raises concerns about the long-term health outcomes for children. The lack of comprehensive data on the prevalence of childhood obesity and its associated risk factors in the state limits the ability of policymakers and public health officials to design targeted interventions. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of childhood obesity in Kaduna State and examine the associated risk factors that contribute to its rising prevalence.

Statement of the Problem

Childhood obesity in Kaduna State has emerged as a major public health issue, with increasing numbers of children affected by this condition. Obesity in children predisposes them to a higher risk of developing chronic diseases in adulthood, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases (Akinyemi et al., 2023). However, there is limited research on the specific factors contributing to childhood obesity in Kaduna State, which hampers the development of effective prevention and intervention strategies. The identification of risk factors such as poor dietary habits, lack of physical activity, and socio-economic influences is essential for addressing the problem of childhood obesity in the state.

The high prevalence of obesity among children in Kaduna State, coupled with limited public health initiatives to curb the trend, necessitates a deeper investigation into the issue. Therefore, this study seeks to evaluate the prevalence of childhood obesity and assess the risk factors that contribute to its development in Kaduna State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the prevalence of childhood obesity in Kaduna State.

2. To identify the dietary, lifestyle, and socio-economic risk factors associated with childhood obesity in Kaduna State.

3. To assess the role of parental influence and education in the prevention of childhood obesity in Kaduna State.

Research Questions

1. What is the prevalence of childhood obesity in Kaduna State?

2. What dietary and lifestyle factors contribute to childhood obesity in Kaduna State?

3. How do socio-economic factors and parental influence affect childhood obesity rates in Kaduna State?

Research Hypotheses

1. There is a significant relationship between poor dietary habits and the prevalence of childhood obesity in Kaduna State.

2. Children from families with lower socio-economic status are more likely to be obese compared to children from higher socio-economic backgrounds in Kaduna State.

3. Lack of physical activity is significantly associated with childhood obesity in Kaduna State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on evaluating childhood obesity and associated risk factors in Kaduna State. It will examine both urban and rural areas within the state to understand the regional variations in the prevalence of obesity. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data, challenges in accessing remote areas, and the cross-sectional nature of the study, which may not establish causality.

Definition of Terms

• Childhood Obesity: A condition in which a child has excess body fat, typically defined as a Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than the 95th percentile for age and sex.

• Risk Factors: Conditions or behaviors that increase the likelihood of developing childhood obesity, including poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, and socio-economic factors.

• Socio-economic Status: The social and economic factors, such as income, education, and occupation, that influence a family's ability to access healthy foods and encourage physical activity.

• Parental Influence: The role of parents in shaping their children's eating habits, physical activity levels, and overall health behaviors.
