Background of the Study
The traditional method of assignment submission in secondary schools has been predominantly paper-based, involving students physically submitting handwritten or printed assignments to their teachers. This method presents several challenges, including loss or misplacement of assignments, difficulties in tracking submissions, and inefficiencies in grading and feedback delivery (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2023). As schools embrace digital transformation, there is an increasing need to adopt technology-driven solutions for academic activities, including assignment submission.
A mobile-based assignment submission system leverages mobile applications to enable students to submit their assignments electronically, eliminating the limitations of paper-based methods. Mobile technology is becoming increasingly accessible, with smartphones and internet connectivity being widely available, even in developing regions (Usman & Bello, 2024). The implementation of such a system can facilitate seamless communication between students and teachers, improve assignment management, and enhance feedback mechanisms.
In Dutse Local Government Area, Jigawa State, secondary schools face various challenges related to assignment submission. Many students struggle with submission deadlines due to distance-related issues, while teachers experience difficulties in organizing and tracking multiple student assignments manually. A mobile-based assignment submission system can mitigate these issues by allowing students to submit their work remotely, ensuring real-time tracking, and enabling teachers to grade assignments efficiently (Okafor & Ibrahim, 2024).
Despite the potential benefits, challenges such as internet connectivity issues, digital literacy gaps, and resistance to change among teachers and students need to be considered. This study aims to design and implement a mobile-based assignment submission system tailored to the needs of secondary schools in Dutse Local Government Area, evaluating its effectiveness, usability, and challenges.
The traditional assignment submission process in secondary schools is characterized by inefficiencies, including delays, misplaced assignments, and difficulties in providing timely feedback to students (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2023). Teachers often struggle to manage large volumes of paper-based assignments, leading to errors in grading and administrative burdens. Additionally, students who live far from school or face transportation challenges may miss submission deadlines, affecting their academic performance.
With the increased availability of mobile technology, there is an opportunity to improve the assignment submission process through a mobile-based system. However, secondary schools in Dutse Local Government Area currently lack a structured, technology-driven approach to assignment submission. While some schools have experimented with digital solutions, such as email submissions, these methods are not optimized for tracking submissions, providing real-time feedback, or integrating with school management systems (Bello & Ibrahim, 2024).
A mobile-based assignment submission system can address these challenges by offering a centralized platform for students to submit their work and for teachers to review, grade, and provide feedback digitally. However, concerns such as internet accessibility, user adoption, and security of submitted assignments must be addressed. This study seeks to implement a mobile-based assignment submission system and evaluate its impact on assignment management in secondary schools in Dutse Local Government Area.
To develop a mobile-based assignment submission system for secondary schools in Dutse Local Government Area, Jigawa State.
To assess the effectiveness of the system in improving assignment submission efficiency and feedback mechanisms.
To identify challenges associated with implementing and adopting the mobile-based system in secondary schools.
How effective is the mobile-based assignment submission system in improving submission efficiency and tracking?
What impact does the system have on teachers’ grading processes and feedback delivery?
What challenges may hinder the successful adoption of the mobile-based system in secondary schools?
The implementation of a mobile-based assignment submission system significantly improves assignment submission efficiency.
The system enhances teachers’ ability to manage, grade, and provide timely feedback on student assignments.
Factors such as internet connectivity and user familiarity affect the successful adoption of the mobile-based system.
This study is significant as it explores the role of mobile technology in enhancing academic processes in secondary schools. It will benefit students by providing a convenient platform for assignment submission and benefit teachers by streamlining assignment tracking and grading. Additionally, the study will serve as a reference for policymakers and school administrators seeking to integrate technology into education, contributing to the broader discourse on digital learning transformation.
The study is limited to the implementation and evaluation of a mobile-based assignment submission system in secondary schools within Dutse Local Government Area, Jigawa State. It focuses on the system's effectiveness, usability, and challenges related to its adoption. The study does not extend to other forms of digital learning or institutions outside the sampled area. Potential limitations include varying levels of digital literacy among students and teachers, as well as internet connectivity constraints.
