Background of the Study

The integration of robotics in education has gained significant attention as an innovative approach to enhance students' learning experiences, particularly in science education. Robotics provides a hands-on, experiential learning environment that fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity (Martínez & González, 2024). In science education, practical experiments play a vital role in reinforcing theoretical knowledge. However, many secondary schools, particularly in developing regions such as Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, face challenges in providing adequate laboratory facilities and resources for effective science education. Robotics-based learning presents an opportunity to bridge this gap by offering interactive and engaging methods of teaching practical science concepts.

Robotics in education has been successfully implemented in various countries, enhancing students' engagement and understanding of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects (Brown & Ahmed, 2023). The use of robotics enables students to visualize and manipulate scientific principles, fostering a deeper understanding of abstract concepts such as mechanics, programming, and automation. Additionally, robotics promotes interdisciplinary learning, integrating physics, computer science, and engineering principles into science education.

In Nigeria, the adoption of robotics in secondary education remains limited due to challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, lack of trained personnel, and resistance to technological innovations in traditional learning environments (Williams & Musa, 2024). In Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, where security concerns and infrastructural deficiencies have significantly impacted education, exploring the use of robotics in science education could provide an alternative means of fostering practical learning experiences. This study aims to investigate the potential benefits, challenges, and effectiveness of integrating robotics into practical science education in secondary schools within the region.

Statement of the Problem

Science education in many Nigerian secondary schools is often hindered by inadequate laboratory facilities, outdated equipment, and a lack of practical learning opportunities. Many students struggle to grasp scientific concepts due to the limited hands-on experience available to them (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2023). In Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, these challenges are exacerbated by ongoing security concerns, which have led to school disruptions and limited investment in educational infrastructure. As a result, students in the region often perform poorly in science subjects, limiting their opportunities for STEM-related careers.

The integration of robotics in science education offers a potential solution by providing students with interactive, technology-driven learning experiences that simulate real-world scientific experiments (Johnson & Bello, 2024). However, there is limited research on how robotics can be effectively implemented in secondary schools in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council. Without proper adoption and strategic implementation, students may continue to face difficulties in acquiring practical scientific knowledge.

This study seeks to explore the feasibility and effectiveness of using robotics in practical science education within the region. It aims to examine how robotics can enhance students’ understanding of science concepts, identify the challenges associated with its implementation, and propose strategies for successful adoption in secondary schools.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of robotics in enhancing students’ understanding of practical science concepts in secondary schools in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council.

  2. To identify the challenges associated with the implementation of robotics in science education in the region.

  3. To explore strategies for integrating robotics into the secondary school science curriculum to improve student engagement and learning outcomes.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is robotics in enhancing students’ understanding of practical science concepts in secondary schools in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council?

  2. What are the challenges associated with the implementation of robotics in science education in the region?

  3. What strategies can be adopted to successfully integrate robotics into the secondary school science curriculum?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The use of robotics in science education significantly improves students’ understanding of practical science concepts.

  2. The implementation of robotics in secondary schools faces challenges such as lack of resources, inadequate training, and resistance to change.

  3. Effective integration of robotics in science education can enhance student engagement and overall academic performance in STEM subjects.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it contributes to the advancement of science education in secondary schools by exploring the potential of robotics as a practical learning tool. The findings will provide valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and school administrators on how to integrate robotics into science curricula to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. Additionally, the study aims to highlight the challenges associated with robotics adoption and propose solutions for overcoming them. The results could serve as a foundation for future research and policy development in educational technology within Maiduguri Metropolitan Council and beyond.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on the use of robotics in practical science education in secondary schools within Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Borno State. It examines the effectiveness, challenges, and integration strategies of robotics-based learning. The study is limited to secondary school students and teachers, and does not extend to primary or tertiary institutions. Factors such as access to technology, teacher training, and school infrastructure may also impact the study's findings.
