Background of the Study
As the digital landscape continues to evolve, students, particularly those in secondary schools, are exposed to various online threats such as cyberbullying, identity theft, and phishing attacks. In Minna, Niger State, like in many other regions, secondary school students are becoming increasingly reliant on the internet for educational and social purposes. However, this growing dependence on digital platforms has raised concerns about the lack of adequate cybersecurity awareness among students.

Cybersecurity awareness is the knowledge and understanding of the potential cybersecurity threats individuals may face, and the actions they can take to protect themselves and their data. Educating students on the risks associated with digital technologies and the best practices for protecting their online privacy is essential for reducing the vulnerability of the younger population to cyber threats. This study aims to investigate the level of cybersecurity awareness among secondary school students in Minna, Niger State, and to explore factors that may influence their understanding of online security.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing use of the internet by secondary school students in Minna, Niger State, there is little research on their level of cybersecurity awareness. Many students remain unaware of the risks they face online and are vulnerable to cyber-attacks. This study seeks to assess the current state of cybersecurity awareness among secondary school students in Minna and identify gaps in their knowledge that need to be addressed to improve their online safety.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of cybersecurity awareness among secondary school students in Minna, Niger State.

  2. To identify factors influencing students’ understanding of cybersecurity practices and online risks.

  3. To recommend strategies for improving cybersecurity awareness and education among secondary school students in Minna.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of cybersecurity awareness among secondary school students in Minna, Niger State?

  2. What factors influence the students’ knowledge and understanding of online security risks?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve cybersecurity awareness among secondary school students in Minna?

Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the cybersecurity awareness of secondary school students in Minna, Niger State. The findings can guide the development of targeted educational programs and initiatives aimed at improving online safety for young people in the region, contributing to the broader effort of fostering a more digitally secure society.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on assessing cybersecurity awareness among secondary school students in Minna, Niger State. Limitations include the possible variation in awareness levels among students from different schools and the difficulty in measuring the depth of their understanding of cybersecurity concepts.
