Background of the Study
In the digital age, universities are increasingly becoming targets for cyberattacks due to their vast networks, which support a large number of students, faculty, and staff. Federal University Dutsin-Ma, located in Katsina State, is no exception. As university students integrate technology into their academic and social lives, they often become vulnerable to cyber threats such as phishing, malware, and identity theft. The lack of cybersecurity awareness among students exacerbates the issue, making it essential to educate them about best practices for securing their personal and academic data.

Mobile applications have emerged as an effective means of delivering real-time information and engaging users. A cybersecurity awareness mobile application could significantly enhance students' understanding of cybersecurity risks, encourage safer online behaviors, and empower students to protect their data. Although there have been various cybersecurity awareness initiatives, many of them are either insufficient or lack direct interaction with students in a personalized manner. The design and implementation of an engaging, educational mobile app would provide an effective platform for reaching students and improving their cybersecurity knowledge at Federal University Dutsin-Ma.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing concerns over cyber threats, students at Federal University Dutsin-Ma often lack sufficient awareness regarding the risks associated with using online platforms and digital tools. The absence of an interactive, mobile-based solution tailored to university students may lead to continued vulnerability to cybersecurity threats. Therefore, there is a need for a tailored mobile application that provides comprehensive cybersecurity awareness, addressing the specific needs of students and fostering a more secure digital campus environment.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To design a cybersecurity awareness mobile application for students at Federal University Dutsin-Ma.

  2. To implement the mobile application with user-friendly features, including educational content, quizzes, and notifications.

  3. To assess the effectiveness of the mobile application in improving cybersecurity awareness among students.

Research Questions

  1. How can a mobile application be designed to effectively increase cybersecurity awareness among students at Federal University Dutsin-Ma?

  2. What features of the mobile application will engage students and encourage participation in cybersecurity training?

  3. How effective is the mobile application in improving students' understanding of cybersecurity risks and safe practices?

Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to enhancing the cybersecurity posture of students at Federal University Dutsin-Ma by providing them with a tool to understand and mitigate cyber risks. The findings will also help in creating a model for other universities in Nigeria to implement mobile applications for cybersecurity awareness, fostering a safer digital environment for academic communities.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The research will focus on the design, implementation, and evaluation of a cybersecurity awareness mobile application at Federal University Dutsin-Ma. The study will be limited to students who have access to mobile devices and are enrolled at the university. Limitations include the challenge of ensuring consistent app engagement among students and measuring the long-term impact of the application on students' cybersecurity practices.
