Background of the Study

Writing proficiency is a critical skill that influences students’ academic success and communication abilities. However, many secondary school students struggle with grammar, spelling, and sentence structure, which negatively impacts their overall writing competence. Traditional grammar instruction methods, such as teacher-led corrections and textbook exercises, often fail to provide instant and personalized feedback, leading to slow progress in writing skill development (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2024).

With advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), grammar correction tools such as Grammarly, QuillBot, and Microsoft Editor have been developed to help students improve their writing by identifying and correcting grammatical errors in real time. These tools provide automated feedback on grammar, punctuation, coherence, and writing style, enabling students to learn from their mistakes and develop better writing habits (Okonkwo & Adeyemi, 2023). Research suggests that AI-based grammar correction tools enhance writing fluency, boost students' confidence, and promote independent learning by offering immediate and personalized writing support (Ogunlade & Musa, 2024).

In Nigeria, secondary school students often face challenges in mastering English writing due to limited exposure to effective writing practices, lack of access to qualified teachers, and insufficient individualized feedback. In Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area, these challenges are further exacerbated by large class sizes and inadequate teaching resources. AI-based grammar correction tools present an opportunity to bridge these gaps by offering students a scalable and accessible means of improving their writing skills.

Despite the growing interest in AI-driven learning tools, there is limited empirical evidence on their effectiveness in Nigerian secondary schools. Many educators are uncertain about whether AI grammar correction tools can significantly improve students’ writing skills or if they may lead to over-reliance on technology without actual learning. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the role of AI-based grammar correction tools in enhancing writing skills among secondary school students in Birnin Kebbi, focusing on grammar accuracy, writing fluency, and student confidence.

Statement of the Problem

The inability of many secondary school students to write grammatically correct and coherent essays is a significant challenge in the Nigerian education system. Poor writing skills are often attributed to ineffective grammar instruction, lack of immediate feedback, and inadequate writing practice (Obinna & Yusuf, 2024). In Birnin Kebbi, these issues are further worsened by the shortage of English teachers and the traditional approach to grammar correction, which relies heavily on manual grading and delayed feedback.

AI-based grammar correction tools have been introduced as a potential solution to these challenges, offering real-time feedback and personalized writing assistance. However, there is little research on their effectiveness in Nigerian secondary schools. Concerns exist regarding whether students genuinely improve their writing skills through these tools or merely depend on them for automatic corrections without learning the underlying grammatical rules.

This study seeks to address this gap by evaluating the impact of AI-based grammar correction tools on students’ writing skills in Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area. Specifically, it will assess whether these tools improve grammar accuracy, writing fluency, and overall confidence in writing. The findings will help determine the viability of AI grammar correction tools as an instructional aid in secondary schools.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the extent of adoption and utilization of AI-based grammar correction tools in secondary schools in Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area.

  2. To evaluate the impact of AI-based grammar correction tools on students' grammar accuracy, writing fluency, and confidence.

  3. To identify challenges associated with the use of AI-based grammar correction tools in secondary school writing instruction.

Research Questions

  1. To what extent are AI-based grammar correction tools adopted and utilized in secondary schools in Birnin Kebbi?

  2. How do AI-based grammar correction tools impact students’ grammar accuracy, writing fluency, and confidence?

  3. What are the key challenges associated with the implementation of AI-based grammar correction tools in secondary schools?

Research Hypotheses

  1. AI-based grammar correction tools are not widely adopted in secondary schools in Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area.

  2. AI-based grammar correction tools significantly improve students’ grammar accuracy, writing fluency, and confidence.

  3. Challenges such as lack of technological infrastructure and digital literacy hinder the effective implementation of AI-based grammar correction tools.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it provides empirical evidence on the effectiveness of AI-based grammar correction tools in improving students’ writing skills. The findings will benefit educators, policymakers, and school administrators by offering insights into how AI-driven learning tools can be integrated into writing instruction. Additionally, the study will contribute to discussions on the role of technology in enhancing literacy education in Nigerian secondary schools.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study is limited to secondary schools in Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area, Kebbi State. It focuses on evaluating the role of AI-based grammar correction tools in improving students' writing skills, specifically in terms of grammar accuracy, writing fluency, and confidence. The study does not extend to other aspects of AI in education, such as speech recognition or automated essay grading.
