Background of the study
In recent years, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into educational technologies has transformed how students access and utilize academic resources. Digital library systems have become increasingly important in universities, offering students and faculty the ability to access a vast array of electronic resources, including e-books, journals, and articles, from the convenience of their computers and mobile devices (Yusuf & Fadare, 2023). Despite the availability of digital libraries, many institutions still struggle with providing personalized and efficient access to relevant resources. One promising solution is the incorporation of AI-powered book recommendation systems.
AI algorithms can analyze students' reading history, preferences, and academic needs to recommend books that are most relevant to their courses and research interests (Chen & Zhang, 2023). In universities within Jalingo Local Government Area, Taraba State, this system could improve how students interact with library resources by making suggestions based on their learning patterns and academic focus. The proposed study aims to design and implement a digital library system with AI-powered book recommendations, ensuring that students receive tailored content that enhances their learning experience and academic performance.
Statement of the problem
The existing digital library systems in universities within Jalingo Local Government Area are often underutilized because students struggle to find relevant materials. This study aims to design and implement an AI-powered digital library system that provides personalized book recommendations, enhancing the utility and accessibility of the university’s library resources.
Objectives of the study
To design a digital library system integrated with an AI-powered book recommendation feature for universities in Jalingo Local Government Area, Taraba State.
To implement the AI-powered recommendation system and integrate it into the existing library infrastructure.
To evaluate the effectiveness of the AI-based recommendations in improving student engagement with library resources.
Research questions
How effective is the AI-powered book recommendation system in improving student engagement with digital library resources?
What impact does the system have on students' ability to find relevant academic materials for their courses and research?
How do students perceive the usability and accuracy of the AI-powered recommendation system?
Significance of the study
This study will enhance the effectiveness of digital library systems in universities by integrating AI to recommend personalized resources to students. It will improve the student experience, enabling them to easily access relevant academic materials that support their coursework and research.
Scope and limitations of the study
The study will focus on the design and implementation of the digital library system with AI-powered recommendations for universities in Jalingo Local Government Area, Taraba State. The study will not address library systems outside this region or cover physical library resources.
