Background of the study
Faculty evaluation is an essential process in higher education institutions, as it helps ensure academic quality, improve teaching effectiveness, and enhance faculty performance. In the case of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, a formal and efficient faculty evaluation system is needed to assess the academic contributions, teaching methodologies, and professional development of faculty members. Traditionally, faculty evaluation methods often rely on paper-based surveys or subjective assessments, which may not fully capture the complexities of faculty performance and student engagement (Salami & Adegoke, 2023). Modern digital systems offer the opportunity to streamline these evaluations by automating processes, improving feedback mechanisms, and providing data-driven insights for decision-making.
A well-designed faculty evaluation system could enhance transparency, accountability, and overall faculty development at the university. Such a system can provide real-time feedback on instructional methods, classroom engagement, and research contributions, helping faculty members improve their effectiveness and align with institutional goals (Ibrahim & Usman, 2023). This study will focus on the design and implementation of a comprehensive digital faculty evaluation system tailored to the needs of Federal University of Technology, Minna, leveraging advanced technologies such as web-based interfaces, data analytics, and secure databases.
Statement of the problem
The Federal University of Technology, Minna, currently lacks an automated and standardized system for evaluating faculty performance. Existing evaluation methods, which include paper-based surveys and informal reviews, are inefficient and often subjective. This lack of a formal system hinders the ability to monitor and improve teaching effectiveness, identify faculty development needs, and make informed decisions related to faculty promotions and tenure. This study seeks to address these challenges by designing and implementing an efficient, reliable, and user-friendly faculty evaluation system that will improve faculty assessment processes at the university.
Objectives of the study
To design a digital faculty evaluation system for Federal University of Technology, Minna.
To implement the faculty evaluation system and ensure its functionality and ease of use for both faculty members and students.
To evaluate the effectiveness of the faculty evaluation system in improving faculty performance and enhancing student engagement.
Research questions
How effective is the designed faculty evaluation system in assessing the performance of faculty members at Federal University of Technology, Minna?
What impact does the faculty evaluation system have on improving faculty teaching practices and academic performance?
How satisfied are faculty members and students with the usability and functionality of the faculty evaluation system?
Significance of the study
The implementation of a faculty evaluation system will enhance the quality of teaching and research at Federal University of Technology, Minna, leading to better learning outcomes and faculty development. The study will provide insights into the design and implementation of similar systems in other institutions and contribute to the improvement of faculty evaluation practices in Nigerian universities.
Scope and limitations of the study
The study will focus on the design and implementation of the faculty evaluation system for Federal University of Technology, Minna, and will be limited to the evaluation of teaching effectiveness, student satisfaction, and faculty development. The study will not extend to other universities or departments within the university.
