Background of the study
Traditional teaching methods, often characterized by face-to-face instruction, textbooks, and in-person assessments, have been the mainstay of secondary education for centuries (Adamu & Umar, 2023). These methods offer direct interaction between teachers and students, fostering a dynamic classroom environment. However, with the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education, AI-based teaching methods have begun to transform classrooms by personalizing learning experiences, automating administrative tasks, and providing real-time feedback (Ahmed & Bello, 2023). AI-based teaching tools, including intelligent tutoring systems, personalized learning platforms, and AI-driven content generation, promise to revolutionize how students learn and engage with content.

In Sokoto South, secondary schools are gradually integrating AI-based teaching tools alongside traditional teaching methods. While AI offers promising solutions to enhance the learning experience, there are concerns regarding its accessibility, cost, and the adequacy of teacher training. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of traditional teaching methods with AI-based teaching methods, assessing their impact on student engagement, academic performance, and overall learning outcomes.

Statement of the problem
While AI-based teaching methods have shown potential in improving student learning experiences, there is limited research comparing the effectiveness of these methods to traditional teaching methods in Sokoto South Local Government Area. The study will address the need for empirical data on how AI-based and traditional teaching methods impact student engagement, learning outcomes, and teaching effectiveness in secondary schools.

Objectives of the study

  1. To compare the effectiveness of traditional and AI-based teaching methods in enhancing student engagement in Sokoto South secondary schools.

  2. To assess the impact of traditional and AI-based teaching methods on student academic performance.

  3. To evaluate the perceptions of students and teachers regarding the effectiveness of traditional versus AI-based teaching methods in Sokoto South secondary schools.

Research questions

  1. How do traditional and AI-based teaching methods compare in terms of student engagement in Sokoto South secondary schools?

  2. What is the impact of traditional and AI-based teaching methods on student academic performance in Sokoto South secondary schools?

  3. How do students and teachers perceive the effectiveness of traditional and AI-based teaching methods in Sokoto South secondary schools?

Significance of the study
This study will provide valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and school administrators in Sokoto South, offering empirical evidence on the relative effectiveness of traditional and AI-based teaching methods. The findings will guide the integration of AI in the classroom to maximize student engagement and learning outcomes.

Scope and limitations of the study
The study will focus on secondary schools in Sokoto South Local Government Area, Sokoto State, comparing traditional and AI-based teaching methods. It will not extend to primary schools or other educational districts. Additionally, the study will focus on specific AI tools currently implemented in the schools.
