Background of the study
Mobile learning, or m-learning, refers to the use of mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, to facilitate learning outside of traditional classroom settings. The widespread use of mobile devices has made mobile learning a viable alternative to traditional classroom-based education, particularly in areas where access to conventional learning resources is limited (Ola & Mohammed, 2023). In both rural and urban areas, mobile learning can offer opportunities for students to access educational materials and engage in interactive learning activities anytime and anywhere (Sulaimon & Obasi, 2023).
However, the adoption and effectiveness of mobile learning can differ significantly between rural and urban areas due to variations in infrastructure, internet access, and technology usage. In Ilorin South Local Government Area, secondary schools in urban and rural areas may experience different challenges and opportunities when adopting mobile learning tools. This study seeks to compare the adoption of mobile learning in rural and urban secondary schools in Ilorin South and evaluate how these environments influence the use of mobile learning for educational purposes.
Statement of the problem
While mobile learning has been widely embraced in urban areas, rural schools in Ilorin South may face challenges such as poor internet connectivity, lack of mobile devices, and limited technological literacy. This study seeks to investigate how mobile learning is adopted and utilized in both rural and urban secondary schools in Ilorin South, exploring the barriers and benefits in each context.

Significance of the study
This study will provide critical insights into the factors influencing the adoption and effectiveness of mobile learning in both rural and urban areas, contributing to the development of more tailored and accessible mobile learning strategies for secondary schools.
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to secondary schools in Ilorin South Local Government Area, Kwara State, and compares the adoption and usage of mobile learning in rural and urban schools. It does not include primary schools or schools outside of this region.
