Background of the Study
The rapid digital transformation in the education sector has significantly increased the reliance on internet-based learning, digital communication, and online resource sharing. While this shift has improved educational access and quality, it has also introduced significant cybersecurity risks, including cyberbullying, identity theft, phishing attacks, and data breaches (Okonkwo & Ibrahim, 2024). Secondary school students and teachers in Minna, Niger State, are increasingly engaging with digital platforms, yet many lack adequate awareness of cybersecurity threats and best practices to protect themselves from cyber risks (Adebayo & Salisu, 2023).
Cybersecurity awareness is essential in preventing online threats and ensuring a safe digital learning environment. Research indicates that many students unknowingly engage in risky online behaviors, such as sharing personal information on social media, clicking on suspicious links, and using weak passwords (Olawale & Musa, 2023). Similarly, teachers often lack the necessary training to recognize and mitigate cybersecurity threats, leaving school networks and student data vulnerable to cyberattacks. Despite global efforts to integrate cybersecurity education into school curricula, many secondary schools in Nigeria, particularly in Minna, have not adopted comprehensive cybersecurity awareness programs (Okonkwo & Yusuf, 2024).
Cybercrimes have become increasingly sophisticated, and students and teachers who lack adequate knowledge of online safety measures are at greater risk. Incidents of cyberbullying, unauthorized access to school databases, and malware attacks on school systems are becoming more frequent, emphasizing the need for structured cybersecurity awareness initiatives (Adebayo & Salisu, 2024). Schools play a crucial role in equipping students and teachers with essential digital literacy skills, including knowledge of cyber hygiene, safe browsing practices, and protection against online threats.
This study aims to assess the level of cybersecurity awareness among students and teachers in secondary schools in Minna and explore strategies for enhancing cybersecurity education. By identifying knowledge gaps and evaluating the effectiveness of existing cybersecurity initiatives, the research will contribute to the development of policies and training programs that promote safe digital practices in secondary schools.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing use of digital technology in education, cybersecurity awareness among secondary school students and teachers in Minna remains low. Many students engage in unsafe online practices, such as using weak passwords, sharing sensitive information, and downloading unauthorized software, without understanding the risks involved (Adebayo & Salisu, 2024). Teachers, who are expected to guide students in safe digital practices, often lack adequate cybersecurity training, leaving them unprepared to handle cyber threats effectively (Okonkwo & Musa, 2024).
Cybersecurity breaches in schools can lead to data theft, unauthorized access to student records, and exposure to harmful online content. The lack of structured cybersecurity awareness programs in Nigerian secondary schools has made students and teachers more vulnerable to online risks (Olawale & Yusuf, 2024). Although some schools have implemented basic IT literacy programs, these do not sufficiently cover cybersecurity principles or provide practical guidance on preventing cyber threats.
Given the increasing integration of digital tools in education, there is an urgent need to enhance cybersecurity awareness among students and teachers. Without targeted interventions, secondary school communities in Minna will remain exposed to cyber threats, affecting not only individual security but also institutional data protection. This study seeks to evaluate the current level of cybersecurity awareness and propose effective strategies for improving cybersecurity education in secondary schools in Minna.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it highlights the urgent need to enhance cybersecurity awareness among secondary school students and teachers in Minna. By identifying existing knowledge gaps and proposing practical solutions, the research will contribute to the development of cybersecurity education policies in schools. The findings will be useful for school administrators, policymakers, and IT professionals seeking to create safer digital learning environments. Additionally, the study will provide recommendations for integrating cybersecurity awareness into school curricula, ensuring that students and teachers are well-equipped to navigate the digital world securely.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to assessing cybersecurity awareness among students and teachers in secondary schools in Minna, Niger State. The research will focus on evaluating the knowledge of online safety practices, identifying common cyber threats, and proposing strategies for improving cybersecurity education. The study does not extend to primary schools, tertiary institutions, or other local government areas outside Minna.
