Background of the study
In recent years, the use of software in education has transformed the learning experience, particularly in secondary schools. Educational software provides teachers and students with tools that enhance classroom instruction and enable students to engage with content in an interactive manner. These software applications are generally classified into two categories: open-source software and proprietary software. Open-source software refers to applications that are freely available to the public and can be modified and distributed by users (Musa & Adamu, 2023). In contrast, proprietary software is developed by a specific company and is usually sold for a fee, with restrictions on modification or redistribution (Sani & Ibrahim, 2023).

In Sokoto South Local Government Area, secondary schools are increasingly adopting both types of software to support teaching and learning activities. However, the decision between open-source and proprietary software often depends on factors such as cost, ease of use, and the level of technical support available. This study aims to compare the usage, benefits, and challenges of open-source and proprietary software in secondary schools within Sokoto South.

Statement of the problem
While open-source software is often regarded as a cost-effective alternative, proprietary software is generally perceived to offer better support and more advanced features. However, there is limited research comparing the impact of both types of software on teaching effectiveness, student engagement, and overall educational outcomes in Sokoto South secondary schools. This study seeks to address this gap by exploring how the usage of open-source and proprietary software affects educational processes.

Objectives of the study

  1. To compare the usage of open-source and proprietary software in terms of teaching effectiveness in Sokoto South secondary schools.

  2. To assess the benefits and challenges associated with using open-source versus proprietary software in secondary schools.

  3. To evaluate the impact of open-source and proprietary software on student learning outcomes in Sokoto South secondary schools.

Research questions

  1. How does the usage of open-source software compare to proprietary software in terms of teaching effectiveness in Sokoto South secondary schools?

  2. What are the benefits and challenges of using open-source versus proprietary software in secondary schools?

  3. How does the use of open-source and proprietary software affect student learning outcomes in Sokoto South secondary schools?

Significance of the study
This study will provide valuable insights for educators, school administrators, and policymakers on the benefits and limitations of both open-source and proprietary software, helping them make informed decisions regarding software adoption in schools.

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is focused on secondary schools in Sokoto South Local Government Area, Sokoto State, comparing the usage of open-source and proprietary software. The study does not include other types of educational software or schools outside the region.

Definitions of terms

  • Open-source software: Software that is freely available for use, modification, and distribution by anyone.

  • Proprietary software: Software developed by a specific company that is typically licensed and sold to users, with restrictions on modification and redistribution.

  • Teaching effectiveness: The ability of a software application to enhance the teaching process, improve student engagement, and achieve educational goals.

  • Student learning outcomes: The academic achievements and skills gained by students as a result of using the software.
