Background of the Study

The integration of technology into education has transformed learning methodologies, improving accessibility, flexibility, and student engagement. Traditional classroom-based learning methods, while effective, often struggle to cater to the diverse learning needs of students, especially in regions with limited educational resources (Okonkwo & Ibrahim, 2024). In Yola North Local Government Area, Adamawa State, secondary schools face several challenges, including overcrowded classrooms, a shortage of qualified teachers, and inconsistent access to quality learning materials. These factors contribute to declining academic performance among students (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2023).

Mobile technology has emerged as a transformative tool for enhancing education, with mobile-based tutoring systems providing students with interactive learning experiences beyond the conventional classroom environment. These systems leverage artificial intelligence, multimedia resources, and adaptive learning strategies to personalize learning, address individual student weaknesses, and improve retention rates (Olawale & Musa, 2023). Mobile tutoring systems offer self-paced learning, enabling students to review lessons, take quizzes, and receive instant feedback, thereby reinforcing classroom instruction and fostering independent study habits.

Despite the increasing adoption of mobile-based learning solutions globally, many secondary schools in Yola North have yet to integrate such technologies into their academic structures. Limited access to quality teachers and a rigid school curriculum make it difficult for students to receive the individualized support they need to excel academically (Okonkwo & Musa, 2024). Mobile-based tutoring systems present a viable solution to these challenges by providing students with continuous access to academic content, enabling them to learn at their own pace, and bridging the gap in teacher-student interactions.

Given the widespread availability of mobile devices among secondary school students in Nigeria, implementing a mobile-based tutoring system can significantly enhance academic performance. By providing interactive learning modules, real-time assessments, and performance tracking, these systems can offer students a more engaging and effective learning experience. This study aims to explore the impact of mobile-based tutoring systems on academic performance in secondary schools in Yola North, identifying best practices for integrating mobile learning into mainstream education.

Statement of the Problem

Academic performance in secondary schools in Yola North Local Government Area has been on the decline due to several factors, including inadequate teaching resources, teacher shortages, and limited access to supplementary learning materials. Many students struggle to grasp concepts taught in class due to the one-size-fits-all approach of traditional classroom teaching (Adebayo & Salisu, 2024). The lack of individualized attention leaves weaker students behind, contributing to high failure rates in key subjects such as Mathematics, English, and the Sciences.

Despite the widespread use of mobile devices among students, educational institutions have not fully leveraged mobile technology to enhance learning. Traditional tutoring programs, though effective, are expensive and inaccessible to many students due to financial constraints and geographical limitations (Okonkwo & Musa, 2024). A mobile-based tutoring system, if well implemented, can provide an affordable and flexible learning alternative that accommodates students' individual needs, allowing them to access learning materials anytime and anywhere.

There is currently a gap in research on the effectiveness of mobile-based tutoring systems in improving academic performance in secondary schools within Yola North. While some studies have explored e-learning solutions in urban areas, there is limited empirical evidence on their impact in semi-urban and rural settings. This study seeks to address this gap by developing and evaluating a mobile-based tutoring system specifically designed to enhance student learning in secondary schools in Yola North.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To develop a mobile-based tutoring system for secondary school students in Yola North Local Government Area, Adamawa State.

  2. To assess the impact of mobile-based tutoring on students’ academic performance in key subjects such as Mathematics, English, and the Sciences.

  3. To evaluate the usability and adoption rate of the mobile-based tutoring system among students and teachers.

Research Questions

  1. How does a mobile-based tutoring system enhance academic performance in secondary schools in Yola North?

  2. What is the impact of mobile-based tutoring on student engagement and comprehension of academic subjects?

  3. How user-friendly and effective is the mobile-based tutoring system for both students and teachers?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The implementation of a mobile-based tutoring system will significantly improve students' academic performance in secondary schools in Yola North.

  2. There is a positive correlation between the use of mobile-based tutoring and increased student engagement and comprehension.

  3. The mobile-based tutoring system will be widely adopted and found effective by students and teachers.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it explores how mobile technology can be utilized to improve academic performance in secondary schools in Yola North. By implementing a mobile-based tutoring system, the research provides a cost-effective and flexible alternative to traditional learning methods, enabling students to receive individualized support. The findings will be valuable for policymakers, educators, and technology developers seeking to integrate mobile learning into Nigeria’s educational system. Additionally, the study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on digital education and its impact on student learning outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study is limited to the development and implementation of a mobile-based tutoring system for secondary schools in Yola North Local Government Area, Adamawa State. The research will focus on evaluating the system’s effectiveness, usability, and impact on student academic performance. The study does not extend to primary schools, tertiary institutions, or other local government areas outside Yola North.
