Background of the Study
Environmental hazards, including air pollution, water contamination, and exposure to hazardous chemicals, can have significant implications for maternal health. Benue State, located in central Nigeria, faces numerous environmental challenges, such as poor waste management, water contamination, and deforestation, which can directly affect the health of pregnant women and their unborn children (Ibrahim et al., 2024). Maternal health is closely linked to environmental factors, with studies indicating that exposure to environmental toxins and poor sanitation can increase the risk of complications such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and low birth weight (Olaniyi et al., 2024).

In Benue State, where agriculture and subsistence farming dominate, exposure to pesticides, heavy metals, and poor living conditions can increase the vulnerability of women during pregnancy (Ajayi et al., 2023). This study aims to investigate the relationship between environmental hazards and maternal health outcomes in Benue State, providing evidence for the development of targeted health interventions and policies.

Statement of the Problem
There is limited research on how environmental hazards in Benue State affect maternal health, particularly in rural areas where healthcare access is often limited. This study seeks to evaluate the specific environmental factors that contribute to maternal health risks and identify areas for improvement in maternal healthcare delivery.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of environmental hazards on maternal health in Benue State.
  2. To identify the key environmental factors contributing to poor maternal health outcomes in the state.
  3. To recommend interventions for reducing environmental risks to maternal health in Benue State.

Research Questions

  1. What are the main environmental hazards affecting maternal health in Benue State?
  2. How do environmental factors influence maternal health outcomes in the state?
  3. What interventions can be introduced to mitigate environmental risks to maternal health in Benue State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Exposure to environmental hazards significantly increases the risk of complications during pregnancy in Benue State.
  2. Environmental pollution, including poor water quality and pesticide exposure, negatively affects maternal health outcomes in Benue State.
  3. Implementing improved environmental management and maternal healthcare services will reduce maternal health risks associated with environmental hazards.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on rural and urban areas in Benue State, particularly those with high levels of environmental pollution and limited access to healthcare. Limitations include the difficulty in obtaining accurate data on environmental exposure and maternal health outcomes due to the reliance on self-reported information.

Definitions of Terms

  • Environmental Hazards: Physical, chemical, or biological factors in the environment that can cause harm to human health.
  • Maternal Health: The health of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period.
  • Pesticides: Chemical substances used in agriculture to control pests, which may have harmful effects on human health when exposed over time.
