Background of the Study
Climate change has increasingly been recognized as a major factor influencing the incidence of vector-borne diseases, particularly malaria, in sub-Saharan Africa. Gombe State, located in northeastern Nigeria, has experienced significant changes in its climate, with rising temperatures and altered rainfall patterns, which have implications for the transmission of malaria (Zubair & Malami, 2024). Malaria, transmitted by the Anopheles mosquito, is highly sensitive to environmental factors, including temperature, rainfall, and humidity. These environmental changes affect the breeding and survival of mosquitoes, thereby influencing malaria prevalence (Umar et al., 2023).

Research has shown that warmer temperatures can accelerate the life cycle of malaria parasites within mosquitoes, while increased rainfall leads to the formation of more breeding sites (Bashir et al., 2023). Gombe State, with its fluctuating climate and growing population, has seen an increase in malaria cases, especially in rural areas where access to healthcare and mosquito control measures is limited (Shaba & Musa, 2024). This study will examine the correlation between climate change, specifically temperature and rainfall variations, and malaria prevalence in Gombe State, aiming to understand how changing climate patterns are contributing to malaria transmission rates in the region.

Statement of the Problem
In Gombe State, the rising incidence of malaria coincides with observable changes in climate, including higher temperatures and altered rainfall patterns. However, the relationship between climate change and malaria prevalence in the state has not been thoroughly investigated. This study aims to fill this gap by examining how climate variability is influencing the transmission of malaria.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the correlation between climate change (temperature and rainfall) and malaria prevalence in Gombe State.
  2. To examine how changes in climate affect the breeding patterns and survival of malaria-carrying mosquitoes in Gombe State.
  3. To provide recommendations for adapting malaria control strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Research Questions

  1. What is the correlation between climate change (temperature and rainfall) and malaria prevalence in Gombe State?
  2. How do variations in climate influence the breeding and survival of mosquitoes in Gombe State?
  3. What are the implications of climate change for malaria control strategies in Gombe State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a significant correlation between rising temperatures and increased malaria prevalence in Gombe State.
  2. Changes in rainfall patterns contribute to the increase in malaria transmission rates in Gombe State.
  3. Climate change significantly affects mosquito breeding sites and the duration of malaria transmission in Gombe State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the correlation between climate data (temperature and rainfall) and malaria incidence over the past decade in Gombe State. Limitations may include challenges in obtaining precise data on malaria cases due to reporting inconsistencies and regional variations in climate impacts.

Definitions of Terms

  • Climate Change: Long-term alterations in temperature, precipitation, and other climate patterns.
  • Malaria Prevalence: The proportion of a population infected with malaria at a given time.
  • Mosquito Breeding Sites: Locations where mosquitoes lay their eggs, often in stagnant water, that are crucial for malaria transmission.
