Background of the Study
Water scarcity is a pressing challenge that affects millions of people globally, particularly in rural areas of developing countries. Bauchi State, located in northeastern Nigeria, faces significant water scarcity issues, exacerbated by factors such as climate change, population growth, and inadequate infrastructure (Bello & Ahmed, 2024). In rural communities, where access to clean water sources is often limited, the consequences of water scarcity are particularly severe, influencing both health and economic well-being (Sulaiman & Idris, 2023). Water is essential for drinking, sanitation, agriculture, and hygiene, and its shortage leads to a range of public health problems, including waterborne diseases, poor sanitation, and malnutrition (Olamide et al., 2023).
Research has shown that communities in Bauchi State rely heavily on groundwater, surface water, and local streams, many of which are polluted or insufficient during dry seasons (Adamu & Musa, 2024). Water scarcity in rural areas often results in people using contaminated water sources, leading to outbreaks of diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and typhoid fever (Aliyu et al., 2023). Moreover, the lack of proper sanitation facilities, coupled with poor waste disposal practices, amplifies the negative health outcomes of water scarcity (Ibrahim et al., 2024). This study seeks to examine the extent of water scarcity in rural Bauchi and its impact on public health, exploring the link between limited water access and disease outbreaks.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of water for human health and well-being, rural communities in Bauchi State face severe water scarcity, which significantly impacts public health. The inadequate availability of clean water sources leads to the use of unsafe water, contributing to the spread of waterborne diseases and other health issues. This study will investigate the health implications of water scarcity in rural areas of Bauchi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on rural areas of Bauchi State where water scarcity is most pronounced. Limitations include potential difficulties in accessing reliable health data, as well as variations in water availability due to seasonal changes that may affect the study’s scope.
