Background of the Study

Solid waste management is a major environmental and public health challenge in Nigeria, particularly in urban and semi-urban communities where rapid population growth outpaces waste management infrastructure. Inadequate disposal of solid waste leads to environmental degradation, pollution, and increased incidence of diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and respiratory infections (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). Community knowledge and practices play a critical role in the effectiveness of waste management strategies. Without proper awareness and sustainable disposal habits, waste accumulates in open spaces, drains, and water bodies, exacerbating health risks (United Nations Environment Programme [UNEP], 2023).

Adamawa State, located in northeastern Nigeria, has witnessed increasing waste management issues due to urban expansion and inadequate waste collection services. In many communities, solid waste is indiscriminately dumped in streets, rivers, and open dumpsites, contributing to air and water pollution (Federal Ministry of Environment [FME], 2024). Additionally, improper waste disposal provides breeding grounds for disease vectors such as mosquitoes and rodents, further threatening public health (National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency [NESREA], 2023).

Despite government efforts to improve waste management, the effectiveness of these initiatives depends on community participation and adherence to proper disposal practices. This study aims to evaluate community knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding solid waste disposal in Adamawa State, identifying gaps that need to be addressed through policy and awareness interventions.

Statement of the Problem

The growing waste management crisis in Adamawa State highlights the need to assess community awareness and disposal practices. Many communities lack access to waste collection services, leading to the common practice of burning or indiscriminately dumping solid waste in open areas (WHO, 2024). Poor waste disposal practices contribute to environmental contamination, block drainage systems, and increase the spread of vector-borne diseases (NESREA, 2023).

Furthermore, there is limited research on the level of community awareness regarding the health and environmental impacts of improper waste disposal in Adamawa State. Without a comprehensive understanding of community perceptions and practices, interventions may fail to address the root causes of poor waste management. This study will examine the extent of community knowledge and practices regarding solid waste disposal, providing insights for developing targeted waste management policies.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of community awareness regarding proper solid waste disposal methods.
  2. To evaluate common waste disposal practices and their environmental impact in Adamawa State.
  3. To identify challenges and barriers to effective waste management at the community level.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of community awareness regarding solid waste disposal in Adamawa State?
  2. What are the predominant waste disposal practices among households and businesses?
  3. What are the major challenges affecting sustainable waste management in Adamawa communities?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Low community awareness contributes to improper waste disposal practices in Adamawa State.
  2. Poor waste disposal practices have a significant negative impact on the environment and public health.
  3. Inadequate government waste management services exacerbate improper solid waste disposal.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on urban and semi-urban areas in Adamawa State, assessing household and community waste disposal behaviors. Limitations may include reluctance among respondents to provide accurate information on personal waste disposal practices.

Definitions of Terms

  • Solid Waste Disposal: The process of managing and discarding solid waste materials in an environmentally safe manner (WHO, 2024).
  • Community Knowledge: The awareness and understanding that individuals within a community have about waste management (UNEP, 2023)
  • Environmental Pollution: The contamination of air, water, and land due to improper waste disposal (FME, 2024).
