Background of the Study

Air pollution is a significant environmental and public health challenge worldwide, contributing to respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung infections, and even lung cancer (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). It results from various sources, including industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, biomass burning, and household air pollution from solid fuel use. Particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and carbon monoxide (CO) are among the pollutants most associated with respiratory illnesses (United Nations Environment Programme [UNEP], 2023).

Kaduna State, a major industrial and commercial hub in northern Nigeria, has seen increasing levels of air pollution due to rapid urbanization, industrial growth, and high vehicular emissions. Many residents, particularly in urban centers like Kaduna metropolis, are exposed to hazardous air pollutants daily (Adebayo et al., 2024). In addition, indoor air pollution from firewood and charcoal use in rural households contributes significantly to respiratory diseases, particularly among women and children (National Bureau of Statistics [NBS], 2024).

The health impacts of air pollution are particularly concerning for vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions. Studies have shown a direct correlation between prolonged exposure to polluted air and increased hospital visits for respiratory-related illnesses (WHO, 2023). Despite this, there is limited region-specific research on the extent to which air pollution contributes to respiratory diseases in Kaduna State. This study aims to bridge this gap by assessing the relationship between air pollution levels and the prevalence of respiratory diseases in the state.

Statement of the Problem

Respiratory diseases are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in Nigeria, and Kaduna State is not exempt from this trend. With the increasing levels of air pollution in urban areas, cases of respiratory infections, bronchitis, asthma, and lung diseases have risen, particularly among children and the elderly (WHO, 2024). However, there is a lack of empirical data on the specific contributions of air pollution to respiratory illnesses in Kaduna State, making it difficult to develop targeted intervention strategies.

Despite national efforts to improve air quality through environmental policies, enforcement remains weak, and industrial pollution continues to rise. The lack of adequate air quality monitoring systems in Kaduna further complicates the ability to assess the true impact of air pollution on respiratory health (UNEP, 2023). This study, therefore, seeks to evaluate the correlation between air pollution levels and respiratory disease prevalence in Kaduna State, providing evidence-based recommendations for policy interventions.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the levels of air pollution in selected areas of Kaduna State.
  2. To examine the relationship between air pollution exposure and the prevalence of respiratory diseases.
  3. To identify vulnerable populations most affected by air pollution-related respiratory illnesses.

Research Questions

  1. What are the levels of air pollution in selected areas of Kaduna State?
  2. How does exposure to air pollution correlate with respiratory disease prevalence?
  3. Which populations are most vulnerable to air pollution-related respiratory diseases in Kaduna State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Higher levels of air pollution are significantly associated with an increased prevalence of respiratory diseases.
  2. Individuals in urban and industrial areas experience higher rates of respiratory illnesses than those in rural areas.
  3. Children and the elderly are more vulnerable to respiratory diseases caused by air pollution exposure.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on selected urban and rural areas in Kaduna State, assessing air pollution levels and their correlation with respiratory disease prevalence. Limitations may include difficulties in obtaining real-time air quality data and reliance on hospital records that may not capture unreported cases.

Definitions of Terms

  • Air Pollution: The presence of harmful substances in the air, including particulate matter and toxic gases, which can negatively affect health (UNEP, 2023).
  • Respiratory Diseases: Medical conditions affecting the lungs and breathing system, including asthma, bronchitis, and COPD (WHO, 2024).
  • Particulate Matter (PM2.5 and PM10): Tiny airborne particles that can penetrate the respiratory system and cause health problems (Adebayo et al., 2024).
