Background of the study
Social media has become an integral part of students' lives, providing them with platforms for communication, entertainment, and information sharing. Popular social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and WhatsApp have created new opportunities for social interaction, networking, and knowledge exchange. While these platforms offer positive learning opportunities, such as access to educational content and peer collaboration, they also present potential distractions that could negatively impact students' academic performance (Abbas et al., 2023; O’Brien, 2024).
In Kontagora, Niger State, secondary school students actively engage with social media both during and outside of school hours. However, the impact of social media on their academic performance remains unclear, with concerns about the excessive use of these platforms leading to procrastination, reduced focus on studies, and decreased academic outcomes. This study aims to investigate the influence of social media on the academic performance of secondary school students in Kontagora, assessing both the positive and negative effects.
Statement of the problem
The increasing use of social media among secondary school students in Kontagora raises concerns about its effect on their academic performance. While social media can offer educational benefits, such as access to study groups and educational resources, excessive use has been linked to reduced concentration, time management issues, and lower academic achievement. There is a need to explore how social media affects students' academic performance in Kontagora, specifically looking at the balance between educational use and recreational activities on these platforms.
