Background of the study
Social media has become an integral part of students' lives, providing them with platforms for communication, entertainment, and information sharing. Popular social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and WhatsApp have created new opportunities for social interaction, networking, and knowledge exchange. While these platforms offer positive learning opportunities, such as access to educational content and peer collaboration, they also present potential distractions that could negatively impact students' academic performance (Abbas et al., 2023; O’Brien, 2024).

In Kontagora, Niger State, secondary school students actively engage with social media both during and outside of school hours. However, the impact of social media on their academic performance remains unclear, with concerns about the excessive use of these platforms leading to procrastination, reduced focus on studies, and decreased academic outcomes. This study aims to investigate the influence of social media on the academic performance of secondary school students in Kontagora, assessing both the positive and negative effects.

Statement of the problem
The increasing use of social media among secondary school students in Kontagora raises concerns about its effect on their academic performance. While social media can offer educational benefits, such as access to study groups and educational resources, excessive use has been linked to reduced concentration, time management issues, and lower academic achievement. There is a need to explore how social media affects students' academic performance in Kontagora, specifically looking at the balance between educational use and recreational activities on these platforms.

Objectives of the study

  1. To examine the impact of social media on the academic performance of secondary school students in Kontagora.
  2. To identify the positive and negative effects of social media on students' study habits and learning outcomes.
  3. To explore the role of social media in enhancing or hindering students' academic achievement in Kontagora.

Research questions

  1. How does social media impact the academic performance of secondary school students in Kontagora?
  2. What positive effects does social media have on students' study habits and learning outcomes?
  3. What negative effects does social media have on students' academic achievement in Kontagora?

Significance of the study
This study will provide valuable insights into the effects of social media on students' academic performance in secondary schools in Kontagora. The findings will help educators, parents, and policymakers understand how social media usage influences students' learning and academic outcomes, offering guidelines for balancing social media use with academic responsibilities.

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to secondary schools in Kontagora Local Government Area, Niger State, focusing on the impact of social media on students' academic performance. It will not include schools outside Kontagora or examine other factors influencing academic achievement.
