Background of the study
The rise of online learning has been one of the most significant educational advancements in recent years. With the advent of digital platforms and the increased availability of the internet, students have had greater access to educational resources, live classes, and collaborative learning opportunities (Zhang et al., 2023; Johnson, 2024). However, a significant challenge facing online learning is internet downtime, which refers to the loss of connectivity or disruptions to internet access. In many regions, particularly in remote areas, inconsistent and unreliable internet access hampers the effective implementation of online learning, limiting the benefits of digital education (González et al., 2023).

In Jalingo, Taraba State, many secondary schools have begun adopting online learning systems, particularly following the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the growing reliance on digital education, internet downtime remains a recurring issue, affecting both students and teachers. This study aims to investigate the impact of internet downtime on online learning in secondary schools in Jalingo, assessing how connectivity issues disrupt learning outcomes and students' ability to engage with online materials.

Statement of the problem
While online learning has proven to be a valuable tool in education, the persistent issue of internet downtime in Jalingo has created barriers to effective learning. Frequent disruptions hinder students’ ability to access learning materials, participate in live classes, and complete assignments on time. Teachers also face challenges in delivering lessons, which may lead to disengagement and reduced academic performance. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate how internet downtime affects the overall online learning experience in secondary schools in Jalingo, Taraba State.

Objectives of the study

  1. To evaluate the impact of internet downtime on online learning in secondary schools in Jalingo, Taraba State.
  2. To assess the challenges faced by students and teachers during periods of internet downtime.
  3. To identify potential solutions to mitigate the impact of internet downtime on online learning.

Research questions

  1. How does internet downtime affect online learning in secondary schools in Jalingo?
  2. What challenges do students and teachers face due to internet downtime during online learning?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to minimize the impact of internet downtime on online learning in Jalingo?

Significance of the study
This study will provide insights into the challenges posed by internet downtime in online learning environments in Jalingo, Taraba State. The findings will inform educational policymakers, school administrators, and technology providers on how to enhance internet infrastructure and create more effective online learning environments.

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to secondary schools in Jalingo Local Government Area, Taraba State, focusing on the impact of internet downtime on online learning. The study will not cover other areas in Taraba State or explore offline learning challenges.
