Background of the Study

Wireless networks have become an essential component of modern educational institutions, providing students, staff, and faculty members with internet access for research, learning, and administrative tasks. However, as wireless networks expand, interference issues have emerged as a significant challenge, impacting connectivity, network reliability, and overall performance. Wireless network interference occurs due to overlapping frequencies, electromagnetic interference (EMI), physical obstructions, and the presence of multiple devices operating in the same spectrum.

At Federal University, Wukari, the increasing demand for wireless connectivity has led to congestion in the available frequency spectrum. The university’s network infrastructure relies on Wi-Fi technology, which is susceptible to interference from neighboring networks, electronic devices, and environmental factors. This interference degrades network quality by causing packet loss, increased latency, and frequent disconnections. Additionally, the university’s geographical location and structural designs may contribute to wireless signal attenuation and propagation issues.

Given the critical role of wireless networks in academic institutions, there is a need to investigate and analyze the sources of interference at Federal University, Wukari. Understanding these interference patterns will help in optimizing network performance, improving data transmission, and ensuring a seamless user experience.

Statement of the Problem

Wireless network interference remains a major obstacle to efficient internet access at Federal University, Wukari. Users frequently experience slow network speeds, connection drops, and high latency, which negatively impact online learning, virtual meetings, and research activities. The increasing number of connected devices, coupled with overlapping Wi-Fi signals from nearby sources, exacerbates network congestion and interference issues.

Despite the deployment of standard wireless networking protocols, the university continues to face performance challenges. Current mitigation strategies, such as adjusting Wi-Fi channels and increasing access points, have not fully resolved interference problems. A comprehensive analysis is needed to identify key interference sources, assess their impact, and propose effective solutions.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify and analyze the primary sources of wireless network interference at Federal University, Wukari.

  2. To evaluate the impact of interference on network performance metrics such as latency, packet loss, and throughput.

  3. To recommend optimal strategies for mitigating wireless interference and improving network performance.

Research Questions

  1. What are the major sources of wireless network interference at Federal University, Wukari?

  2. How does interference affect network performance in terms of connectivity, speed, and reliability?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce interference and optimize wireless network efficiency?

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on analyzing wireless network interference issues at Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State. It will assess signal disruptions, environmental factors, and network congestion. Limitations include external interference beyond university control and hardware-related constraints.

Definitions of Terms

  • Wireless Network Interference: Disruptions in signal transmission due to overlapping frequencies or external factors.

  • Latency: The time delay in data transmission across a network.

  • Packet Loss: The failure of data packets to reach their intended destination due to network congestion or interference.
