Background of the Study
Biometric authentication has emerged as one of the most secure and convenient methods of verifying user identities for network access. Unlike traditional password-based systems, biometrics offer a higher level of security since they rely on unique physical or behavioral characteristics, such as fingerprints, retina scans, or voice recognition. For educational institutions like Federal University, Lokoja, where access to sensitive academic and personal data is critical, adopting biometric authentication could reduce the risk of unauthorized access and ensure a more streamlined user experience. This study will investigate the potential adoption of biometric authentication for network access at the university and evaluate its effectiveness in enhancing security and user convenience.

Statement of the Problem
Federal University, Lokoja, has faced challenges with ensuring secure and efficient network access for its growing user base, which includes students, faculty, and administrative staff. Traditional authentication methods, such as passwords, are increasingly susceptible to cyber threats like phishing and credential theft. While biometric systems have the potential to significantly enhance security, the university has yet to explore this technology as part of its authentication framework. This study seeks to evaluate the feasibility and potential benefits of integrating biometric authentication for network access in the university.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the current authentication methods used for network access at Federal University, Lokoja.

  2. To assess the potential security benefits and user experience improvements of adopting biometric authentication for network access.

  3. To propose a plan for the implementation of biometric authentication systems at Federal University, Lokoja.

Research Questions

  1. What are the current authentication challenges faced by Federal University, Lokoja, in securing network access?

  2. How can biometric authentication improve security and user convenience at Federal University, Lokoja?

  3. What are the barriers to the adoption of biometric authentication for network access in the university?

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on investigating the adoption of biometric authentication for network access at Federal University, Lokoja. It will assess both the security and practical aspects of biometric authentication within the university’s existing network infrastructure. The study will not address the broader application of biometrics outside of network access systems. Limitations include potential implementation challenges, including costs, user acceptance, and technical compatibility.

Definitions of Terms

  • Biometric Authentication: The process of identifying users based on unique biological or behavioral characteristics.

  • Network Access: The permission to connect and use resources within a computer network.

  • Password Authentication: A traditional method of verifying user identity by requiring a username and password.
