Background of the Study
Network access control (NAC) is a critical component of network security, especially in academic institutions where sensitive data and intellectual property are handled on a daily basis. Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State, has an expansive network used by students, faculty, and administrative staff. However, without an effective NAC system, unauthorized access to the network can occur, potentially exposing the institution’s data to malicious actors.
A robust NAC system ensures that only authorized devices and users can access the network, based on predefined security policies. It also helps in monitoring and controlling the behavior of devices on the network, including enforcing security configurations and ensuring compliance with security protocols. This study will focus on developing a network access control system for the university that integrates user authentication, device validation, and real-time monitoring of network traffic to prevent unauthorized access and mitigate security risks.
Statement of the Problem
Federal University, Lokoja, does not have an effective network access control system in place, making the network vulnerable to unauthorized access and potential security breaches that can compromise sensitive academic and administrative data.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the current access control mechanisms in place at Federal University, Lokoja.
To develop a network access control system that ensures only authorized users and devices can access the campus network.
To implement and test the effectiveness of the proposed network access control system in securing the university’s network.
Research Questions
What are the current access control practices in place at Federal University, Lokoja?
How can a network access control system be developed to enhance security at the university?
How effective is the implemented network access control system in preventing unauthorized access to the campus network?
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on developing and implementing a network access control system specifically for the internal campus network at Federal University, Lokoja. The study does not cover external networks or third-party services. Limitations may include challenges in obtaining real-time data for testing the NAC system and integrating the system with existing infrastructure.
Definitions of Terms
Network Access Control (NAC): A set of policies and technologies used to manage access to a network based on predefined security requirements.
Authentication: The process of verifying the identity of a user or device attempting to access the network.
Device Validation: The process of ensuring that only devices meeting certain security standards are allowed to connect to the network.
Real-Time Monitoring: The continuous observation of network traffic and user activities to detect any suspicious behavior.
