Hemophilia is a rare but serious inherited bleeding disorder characterized by the inability of the blood to clot properly due to a deficiency in clotting factors, primarily Factor VIII (hemophilia A) or Factor IX (hemophilia B). It affects approximately 1 in 5,000 male births worldwide (World Federation of Hemophilia, 2024). Children with hemophilia are at risk of spontaneous bleeding episodes, prolonged bleeding from minor injuries, and joint damage due to internal bleeding, necessitating specialized medical care and management.
Nurses play a crucial role in managing hemophilia by administering clotting factor replacements, educating patients and families about self-care, and preventing complications. However, studies suggest that gaps in nurses' knowledge and training can lead to inadequate management and increased morbidity among pediatric hemophilia patients (Okonkwo et al., 2024). Despite the increasing global awareness and advancements in hemophilia treatment, research on nurses' knowledge and management practices in Nigeria remains limited.
This study will evaluate nurses' knowledge of hemophilia, their adherence to best practices in management, and the challenges they face in providing optimal care to children with hemophilia at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi.
Effective management of hemophilia in children requires a comprehensive understanding of the disease, early recognition of bleeding episodes, timely administration of clotting factor therapy, and appropriate patient education. However, evidence suggests that many nurses lack the necessary knowledge and skills to manage hemophilia effectively, leading to preventable complications such as joint deformities, severe anemia, and increased hospitalization rates (Adeyemi & Bello, 2024).
At Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, the extent of nurses' knowledge and adherence to hemophilia management guidelines remains unclear. Without a thorough assessment, gaps in practice may persist, compromising the quality of care provided to pediatric hemophilia patients. This study aims to examine nurses' knowledge and management practices for hemophilia in children, identify areas of weakness, and propose strategies for improving care.
H₀: Nurses at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital do not have adequate knowledge of hemophilia in children.
H₁: Nurses at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital have adequate knowledge of hemophilia in children.
H₀: Nurses’ management practices do not align with best practices in hemophilia care.

H₀: There are no significant challenges affecting nurses' ability to manage pediatric hemophilia.
H₁: Significant challenges affect nurses' ability to manage pediatric hemophilia.
This study will focus on nurses working in pediatric units, emergency departments, and hematology clinics at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi. Limitations may include variability in individual nurse experience levels and access to hemophilia treatment resources.
