Background of the Study

Burnout is a serious occupational hazard for healthcare workers, particularly in high-stress environments like oncology care, where professionals are regularly exposed to emotionally taxing situations (Liu et al., 2023). Oncology nurses, who deal with terminal patients and challenging treatment regimens, are particularly vulnerable to burnout (Choi & Lee, 2024). Burnout can lead to decreased quality of care, poor patient outcomes, and even turnover among healthcare staff (Maslach et al., 2022).

Nurses play a crucial role in reducing burnout by promoting resilience, providing support to colleagues, and fostering a supportive work environment (Hochschild et al., 2023). Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Kaduna State, serves as a key center for oncology care, and understanding how nurses contribute to reducing burnout among oncology care providers is essential to improving the work environment and patient care. This study seeks to investigate the role of nurses in mitigating burnout among oncology care providers.

Statement of the Problem

Burnout is a growing concern among oncology nurses and other healthcare workers at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital. While there are recognized strategies for reducing burnout, such as peer support and institutional interventions, the role of nurses in combating this issue has not been thoroughly studied. This study will examine how nurses can reduce burnout within oncology care settings.

Objectives of the Study

1. To investigate the extent of burnout among oncology care providers at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital.

2. To assess the role of nurses in reducing burnout among oncology care providers.

3. To identify strategies and interventions that can be implemented by nurses to alleviate burnout.

Research Questions

1. To what extent do oncology care providers experience burnout at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital?

2. What role do nurses play in reducing burnout among oncology care providers?

3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce burnout among oncology care providers?

Research Hypotheses

1. Oncology care providers at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital experience significant levels of burnout.

2. Nurses significantly contribute to reducing burnout through peer support, resilience-building activities, and self-care strategies.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on oncology nurses and healthcare providers at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital. Limitations include the potential difficulty in measuring burnout levels subjectively and the variability in burnout experiences across different individuals.

Definitions of Terms
