Background of the Study
Early detection of childhood cancers significantly improves the chances of effective treatment and survival (Suh et al., 2023). However, many childhood cancers are diagnosed at later stages due to a lack of awareness and understanding of early warning signs among healthcare providers, including oncology nurses (Elmore et al., 2024). Oncology nurses play a crucial role in the early identification of these warning signs, which may include unexplained weight loss, persistent fever, unusual lumps, and prolonged pain (Suh et al., 2023).
Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) is a major healthcare provider that cares for a diverse population. As part of their professional duties, oncology nurses must be equipped with knowledge about the early warning signs of childhood cancers to facilitate timely referrals and interventions. This study will examine the level of knowledge of oncology nurses regarding the early warning signs of childhood cancers and its impact on early detection.
Statement of the Problem
There is insufficient research on the knowledge of oncology nurses at LASUTH regarding early warning signs of childhood cancers. A lack of knowledge in this area can delay diagnosis and treatment, negatively affecting patient outcomes. This study seeks to assess oncology nurses' knowledge in this area and recommend strategies for improvement.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of knowledge of oncology nurses regarding early warning signs of childhood cancers.
2. To evaluate the effectiveness of oncology nurses in identifying early warning signs of childhood cancers at LASUTH.
3. To identify factors influencing oncology nurses' knowledge of childhood cancer signs.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of knowledge among oncology nurses regarding the early warning signs of childhood cancers?
2. How effectively do oncology nurses at LASUTH identify early warning signs of childhood cancers?
3. What factors contribute to oncology nurses' knowledge or lack thereof regarding childhood cancer signs?
Research Hypotheses
1. Oncology nurses at LASUTH possess a limited level of knowledge regarding early warning signs of childhood cancers.
2. There is a significant relationship between oncology nurses’ knowledge of early warning signs and their ability to identify potential cases of childhood cancers.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on oncology nurses working at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and variability in the quality of training among nurses.
Definitions of Terms
• Early Warning Signs: Symptoms or physical manifestations that may indicate the presence of childhood cancers, often prior to a formal diagnosis.
• Oncology Nurses: Nurses specializing in the care of cancer patients, with a responsibility for monitoring symptoms and facilitating early detection.
• Childhood Cancer: Cancers that occur in children, including leukemia, brain tumors, and lymphoma, which are often different from adult cancers in terms of behavior and treatment.
