Background of the Study
Palliative care is a vital component of healthcare for patients with terminal illnesses, aimed at providing relief from pain and improving the quality of life in the face of incurable diseases (Murray et al., 2023). The role of nurses in delivering palliative care is significant, as they are often the primary caregivers involved in pain management, emotional support, and ensuring patient comfort (Harding et al., 2024). In Nigeria, the importance of palliative care services, particularly nurse-led interventions, has gained increased attention, especially in hospitals like Federal Teaching Hospital, Bauchi State, where a growing number of patients with advanced cancers and chronic conditions require compassionate care.
Nurse-led palliative care services involve various aspects of care such as pain management, psychosocial support, and the provision of end-of-life care, all of which are essential in improving patient comfort. Studies have shown that well-implemented palliative care, led by skilled nurses, can significantly reduce patient suffering, enhance emotional well-being, and provide support for families during challenging times (Olufemi et al., 2023). This study will evaluate how nurse-led palliative care services at Federal Teaching Hospital, Bauchi State, impact the comfort levels of patients receiving terminal care.
Statement of the Problem
Although palliative care has been recognized for its potential to improve patient comfort, the specific contribution of nurse-led palliative care services in improving comfort in terminally ill patients at Federal Teaching Hospital, Bauchi State, has not been extensively studied. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of these services in alleviating pain and enhancing the quality of life for patients in the terminal stages of illness.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the effectiveness of nurse-led palliative care services in improving patient comfort at Federal Teaching Hospital, Bauchi State.
2. To evaluate the impact of nurse-led palliative care services on reducing pain and managing symptoms in terminally ill patients.
3. To identify challenges faced by nurses in delivering palliative care services that impact patient comfort.
Research Questions
1. How effective are nurse-led palliative care services in improving patient comfort at Federal Teaching Hospital, Bauchi State?
2. What is the impact of nurse-led palliative care services on pain relief and symptom management in terminally ill patients?
3. What are the challenges faced by nurses in delivering effective palliative care services at Federal Teaching Hospital, Bauchi State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurse-led palliative care services significantly improve the comfort levels of terminally ill patients.
2. There is a significant reduction in pain and symptom severity as a result of nurse-led palliative care services.
3. The delivery of palliative care services is affected by significant challenges, including lack of resources and training.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurse-led palliative care services at Federal Teaching Hospital, Bauchi State, specifically evaluating their impact on patient comfort. Limitations may include the subjective nature of assessing comfort and potential biases in patient self-reporting. Additionally, challenges such as inadequate resources or training may affect the quality of care provided.
