Background of the Study
Prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among men globally, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa (Ojo et al., 2023). Early detection and awareness of prostate cancer significantly increase survival rates through timely intervention (David et al., 2023). Health education plays a crucial role in raising awareness, yet many men remain uninformed about the disease, its risk factors, and the importance of early screening (Kwarteng & Mensah, 2024). Oncology nurses are often at the forefront of health education, providing patients with critical information about cancer prevention, early signs, and screening methods.
At Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe State, oncology nurses are integral to the dissemination of health information, including prostate cancer awareness. The delivery of clear, culturally sensitive, and accurate information by oncology nurses can enhance public knowledge about prostate cancer and motivate individuals to undergo screening (Bello et al., 2023). This study examines the role of oncology nurses in delivering health education on prostate cancer awareness and its effectiveness in improving patients' knowledge of the disease at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe State.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of educational materials and healthcare professionals to provide guidance, there remains a significant gap in awareness regarding prostate cancer in many communities. This study aims to evaluate how oncology nurses' health education interventions contribute to raising awareness about prostate cancer and improving early detection practices at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the effectiveness of oncology nurse-delivered health education in raising awareness of prostate cancer among patients at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe State.
2. To assess the impact of health education on the knowledge of prostate cancer risk factors and screening methods.
3. To identify the challenges faced by oncology nurses in delivering effective health education on prostate cancer.
Research Questions
1. How effective is oncology nurse-delivered health education in raising prostate cancer awareness at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe State?
2. What impact does health education have on patients’ knowledge of prostate cancer risk factors and screening?
3. What challenges do oncology nurses face in delivering health education on prostate cancer?
Research Hypotheses
1. Oncology nurse-delivered health education significantly improves prostate cancer awareness among patients.
2. There is a significant relationship between health education and patients' knowledge of prostate cancer risk factors and screening.
3. Oncology nurses face significant challenges in delivering effective health education on prostate cancer.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the role of oncology nurses in delivering prostate cancer health education at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe State. Limitations may include variation in patients' previous knowledge of cancer, limited access to educational resources, and potential biases in reporting from participants.
