Background of the Study
Workload is a critical factor affecting the performance, efficiency, and well-being of healthcare professionals, particularly emergency nurses. Emergency nursing is a high-pressure specialty that requires quick decision-making, multitasking, and resilience to manage critically ill or injured patients (World Health Organization, 2024). An excessive workload can lead to burnout, medical errors, and reduced patient care quality (Adeyemi & Hassan, 2024).
In Nigeria, emergency departments in public hospitals often operate under conditions of severe staff shortages, limited medical resources, and overcrowding. In Gombe State, the increasing burden of emergency cases due to road traffic accidents, infectious disease outbreaks, and violent conflicts has put immense pressure on emergency nurses (Garba & Sanni, 2023). These nurses frequently work long hours, handle multiple patients simultaneously, and face emotional and physical exhaustion.
Despite the recognized impact of workload on healthcare professionals, little research has been conducted on how it affects the performance of emergency nurses in Gombe State. Understanding the relationship between workload and nursing performance can provide insights into improving staffing policies, working conditions, and patient care outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
The rising number of emergency cases in Gombe State has placed significant strain on emergency nurses, leading to concerns about workload-induced stress, fatigue, and reduced efficiency. Studies have shown that high workloads contribute to poor job satisfaction, increased absenteeism, and higher rates of burnout among nurses (Williams & Yusuf, 2024). Additionally, excessive workload may compromise patient care, leading to misdiagnosis, medication errors, and delays in treatment (Bello & Adeyemi, 2023).
Despite these challenges, there is limited empirical evidence on the specific impact of workload on emergency nursing performance in Gombe State. This study aims to investigate how workload affects the performance of emergency nurses, identify contributing factors, and propose strategies to optimize workload management.

Research Hypotheses
H₀: Workload does not significantly affect the performance of emergency nurses in Gombe State.
H₁: Workload significantly affects the performance of emergency nurses in Gombe State.
H₀: There are no significant factors contributing to workload challenges among emergency nurses.
H₁: There are significant factors contributing to workload challenges among emergency nurses.
H₀: Implementing workload management strategies will not improve emergency nursing performance.
H₁: Implementing workload management strategies will improve emergency nursing performance.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on emergency nurses working in hospitals and trauma centers in Gombe State. It examines workload-related factors such as patient volume, staffing levels, work shifts, and emotional stress. Limitations include variations in workload across different healthcare facilities, potential response bias from nurses, and external factors such as hospital policies and funding constraints.

- Workload – The amount of work assigned to an employee, including the number of patients handled, working hours, and task complexity.
- Emergency Nurse – A healthcare professional specializing in providing immediate medical care during life-threatening situations.
- Burnout – A state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress at work.
- Patient Care Quality – The standard of healthcare services provided to patients, ensuring safety, efficiency, and effectiveness.
