Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder affecting approximately 1% of the global population, characterized by delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thinking, and impaired cognitive function (World Health Organization, 2024). In Nigeria, schizophrenia remains a major public health concern, with many affected individuals facing challenges in accessing appropriate mental healthcare services (Adeyemi & Hassan, 2024). Managing schizophrenia requires specialized psychiatric nursing interventions, including medication management, psychoeducation, and behavioral therapy to help patients achieve stability and improve their quality of life (Olawale & Musa, 2023).
Psychiatric nurses play a vital role in the care of schizophrenia patients by administering antipsychotic medications, providing psychological support, and ensuring adherence to treatment plans. However, psychiatric nurses in Sokoto State face several challenges, including inadequate mental health facilities, insufficient psychiatric training, high patient loads, and cultural misconceptions about schizophrenia (Garba & Sanni, 2024). Many patients and their families resort to traditional healing methods, leading to delayed treatment and worsening of symptoms (Chukwu & Ibrahim, 2023).
Despite the crucial role of psychiatric nurses, limited research has been conducted on the challenges they face in managing schizophrenia patients in Sokoto State. Understanding these challenges is essential for developing strategies to improve mental healthcare services and enhance patient outcomes.
Schizophrenia management in Sokoto State is hindered by multiple challenges, including stigma, lack of specialized psychiatric training, and inadequate healthcare resources (Williams & Yusuf, 2024). Psychiatric nurses, who are frontline caregivers, often struggle with high patient loads, non-adherence to medication, and limited institutional support, making effective management of schizophrenia difficult (Bello & Adeyemi, 2023).
Furthermore, the lack of mental health awareness and community support exacerbates the difficulties psychiatric nurses face in delivering care. Many schizophrenia patients experience social exclusion, neglect, and inadequate family support, further complicating their treatment (Ibrahim & Musa, 2024). This study aims to examine the specific challenges psychiatric nurses face in managing schizophrenia patients in Sokoto State and propose strategies to enhance mental health service delivery.

This study focuses on psychiatric nurses working in mental health hospitals, primary healthcare centers, and psychiatric units in Sokoto State. It examines the challenges they face in managing schizophrenia patients and their impact on treatment outcomes. Limitations include variations in healthcare facility resources, reluctance of some nurses to disclose challenges, and potential bias in self-reported difficulties. Findings may not be generalizable to states with better psychiatric care infrastructure.
