Background of the Study
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain a leading cause of mortality worldwide, particularly among women, who often have limited access to preventive healthcare services. In rural areas, factors such as lack of awareness, poor healthcare access, and cultural beliefs contribute to an increased risk of heart diseases among women (World Health Organization, 2024). Heart health awareness plays a critical role in reducing morbidity and mortality by equipping individuals with knowledge on risk factors, symptoms, and prevention strategies (Aliyu & Usman, 2023).
In Nigeria, rural women are particularly vulnerable to heart diseases due to socioeconomic challenges, limited access to medical care, and high rates of risk factors such as hypertension, obesity, and poor dietary habits (Bello et al., 2023). In Jigawa State, the role of cardiac nurses in promoting heart health awareness is essential in ensuring early detection, prevention, and management of cardiovascular conditions. Cardiac nurses, through health education campaigns, community outreach programs, and lifestyle modification guidance, can significantly improve awareness and preventive health behaviors among rural women (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024).
Despite the growing burden of CVDs among women in rural communities, little research has been conducted on the specific role of cardiac nurses in promoting heart health awareness in Jigawa State. This study seeks to examine the effectiveness of nurse-led heart health awareness programs in reducing the prevalence of heart disease among rural women.
Statement of the Problem
Rural women in Jigawa State face a disproportionate burden of cardiovascular diseases due to limited healthcare infrastructure, poor health literacy, and cultural barriers to preventive care. Many women remain unaware of the risk factors and symptoms of heart disease, leading to delayed diagnosis and poor health outcomes (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2023).
Cardiac nurses, through structured health awareness initiatives, play a crucial role in educating rural women about heart disease prevention and management. However, there is a lack of empirical data on the effectiveness of these interventions in Jigawa State. Without targeted awareness programs, the prevalence of heart disease among women may continue to rise, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the role of cardiac nurses in promoting heart health awareness among rural women in Jigawa State.
2. To evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led heart health awareness programs in improving knowledge and preventive behaviors.
3. To identify barriers to heart health education and awareness among rural women.
Research Questions
1. What role do cardiac nurses play in promoting heart health awareness among rural women in Jigawa State?
2. How effective are nurse-led awareness programs in improving heart disease knowledge and prevention?
3. What are the barriers preventing rural women from accessing heart health education?
Research Hypotheses
1. Cardiac nurses significantly contribute to heart health awareness among rural women.
2. Nurse-led awareness programs improve knowledge and promote positive heart health behaviors.
3. Cultural beliefs and limited healthcare access hinder rural women’s participation in heart health education programs.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on cardiac nurses and rural women in selected communities in Jigawa State. Limitations may include variations in health literacy levels and potential challenges in accessing rural participants.
Definition of Terms
• Cardiac Nurses: Specialized nurses who focus on preventing, diagnosing, and managing cardiovascular diseases.
• Heart Health Awareness: Knowledge about cardiovascular disease risk factors, symptoms, and prevention strategies.
