Background of the Study

Cancer treatment often leads to long-term physical and psychological effects, necessitating structured post-treatment rehabilitation to help patients regain functional independence and improve their quality of life. Rehabilitation may include physical therapy, nutritional counseling, psychosocial support, and lifestyle modifications (World Health Organization, 2024). Oncology nurses play a key role in facilitating this process by providing guidance on symptom management, assisting with recovery plans, and supporting patients in their transition back to daily life (Aliyu & Usman, 2023).

In Nigeria, and specifically in Gombe State, post-treatment rehabilitation services are often limited, leaving many cancer patients struggling with lingering side effects such as fatigue, neuropathy, lymphedema, and emotional distress (Bello et al., 2023). Oncology nurses serve as a critical link between patients and rehabilitation services, helping them navigate the recovery process through education, referrals, and supportive care (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024).

Despite the essential role of oncology nurses in rehabilitation, there is little research on their involvement in post-treatment care in Gombe State. This study aims to examine how oncology nurses contribute to cancer rehabilitation and assess the challenges they face in providing effective support.

Statement of the Problem

Cancer patients often experience long-term physical and psychological complications after completing treatment, yet post-treatment rehabilitation services remain underdeveloped in many parts of Nigeria. The lack of structured rehabilitation programs may lead to poor recovery outcomes, decreased functionality, and lower quality of life (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2023).

Oncology nurses play a vital role in post-treatment rehabilitation by assisting patients with symptom management, providing emotional support, and facilitating referrals to rehabilitation specialists. However, in Gombe State, factors such as inadequate healthcare infrastructure, shortage of trained rehabilitation specialists, and limited patient awareness may hinder the effectiveness of oncology nurses in providing post-treatment care.

This study seeks to explore the role of oncology nurses in post-treatment rehabilitation and identify ways to improve cancer survivorship care in Gombe State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To examine the role of oncology nurses in post-treatment rehabilitation of cancer patients in Gombe State.

2. To assess the effectiveness of oncology nursing interventions in addressing post-treatment complications.

3. To identify challenges faced by oncology nurses in providing post-treatment rehabilitation services.

Research Questions

1. What is the role of oncology nurses in post-treatment rehabilitation of cancer patients in Gombe State?

2. How effective are oncology nursing interventions in improving post-treatment recovery?

3. What are the challenges oncology nurses face in delivering rehabilitation support?

Research Hypotheses

1. Oncology nurses play a significant role in post-treatment rehabilitation of cancer patients.

2. Limited healthcare resources negatively impact oncology nurses' ability to provide effective rehabilitation services.

3. Strengthening oncology nursing involvement in rehabilitation programs will improve patient recovery outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on oncology nurses and cancer patients who have completed treatment in selected hospitals in Gombe State. Limitations may include variations in rehabilitation services across hospitals and potential difficulty in tracking long-term patient progress.

Definition of Terms

• Post-Treatment Rehabilitation: A set of medical and supportive care services aimed at helping cancer patients regain physical and mental well-being after treatment.

• Oncology Nurses: Nurses who specialize in providing care to cancer patients, including treatment, symptom management, and rehabilitation support.
