Background of the Study
Bipolar disorder is a chronic mental health condition characterized by alternating episodes of mania and depression, significantly impacting an individual's quality of life (World Health Organization, 2024). One of the biggest challenges in managing bipolar disorder is preventing relapse, which can lead to severe functional impairment, increased healthcare costs, and a higher risk of suicide (Aliyu & Usman, 2023).
Psychiatric nurses play a critical role in preventing relapse by providing medication management, psychoeducation, crisis intervention, and emotional support to patients and their families (Bello et al., 2023). Research indicates that structured nursing interventions, such as adherence counseling and early symptom recognition, can significantly reduce relapse rates in bipolar disorder patients (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024).
In Adamawa State, access to psychiatric care is limited, and mental health services are often inadequate due to workforce shortages and stigma surrounding mental illness. As a result, many bipolar disorder patients experience frequent relapses, leading to hospital readmissions and poor treatment outcomes (Oladipo & Hassan, 2024). This study seeks to examine the role of psychiatric nurses in preventing relapse among bipolar disorder patients in Adamawa State, identifying effective interventions and challenges in care delivery.
Statement of the Problem
Despite advances in bipolar disorder treatment, relapse rates remain high due to medication non-adherence, lack of psychoeducation, and inadequate support systems (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2023). In Adamawa State, psychiatric services are often overstretched, making it difficult for nurses to provide continuous care and relapse prevention strategies.
Many bipolar disorder patients do not fully understand their condition, leading to poor adherence to treatment plans and lifestyle modifications (Bello et al., 2024). Additionally, psychiatric nurses may lack the necessary training or resources to implement comprehensive relapse prevention programs. Without targeted nursing interventions, the burden of bipolar disorder relapse in Adamawa State will continue to rise.
Objectives of the Study
1. To examine the role of psychiatric nurses in preventing relapse among bipolar disorder patients in Adamawa State.
2. To assess the challenges faced by psychiatric nurses in delivering relapse prevention interventions.
3. To recommend strategies for improving psychiatric nursing interventions in bipolar disorder management.
Research Questions
1. How do psychiatric nurses contribute to preventing relapse in bipolar disorder patients?
2. What challenges do psychiatric nurses face in providing relapse prevention care?
3. What strategies can improve the effectiveness of psychiatric nursing interventions in bipolar disorder management?
Research Hypotheses
1. Psychiatric nurses play a significant role in reducing relapse rates among bipolar disorder patients.
2. Limited training and resource constraints hinder effective relapse prevention care.
3. Strengthening psychoeducation and adherence counseling can improve patient outcomes in bipolar disorder management.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on psychiatric healthcare centers in Adamawa State. Limitations may include difficulties in tracking long-term patient relapse rates and variations in relapse prevention strategies across different facilities.
