Background of the Study

Chemotherapy is a cornerstone in cancer treatment, but it often comes with a range of side effects that can significantly impact patients' quality of life. Effective management of these side effects is crucial, and nurses play a pivotal role in this aspect of care. Their responsibilities include monitoring patients for adverse reactions, providing education on managing symptoms, and administering supportive treatments. However, the effectiveness of these interventions largely depends on the nurses' knowledge and practices.

In Nigeria, cancer incidence is rising, leading to an increased demand for oncology services. Kano State, being one of the most populous regions, faces a significant burden of cancer cases. Despite this, there is limited research focusing on the competencies of nurses in managing chemotherapy-induced side effects in this region. Understanding the current state of nurses' knowledge and practices is essential for identifying gaps and implementing targeted educational programs to enhance patient care.

Statement of the Problem

Managing chemotherapy side effects requires specialized knowledge and skills. Inadequate understanding or improper practices among nurses can lead to suboptimal patient outcomes, including unmanaged symptoms, decreased treatment adherence, and reduced quality of life. Preliminary observations suggest that nurses in Kano State may lack sufficient training in oncology care, potentially affecting their ability to manage chemotherapy side effects effectively. This study aims to assess the current knowledge and practices of nurses in this area to identify educational needs and improve patient care.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the level of knowledge among nurses in Kano State regarding the management of chemotherapy side effects.

2. To assess the current practices employed by these nurses in managing chemotherapy-induced symptoms.

3. To identify gaps in knowledge and practice that may hinder effective patient care.

Research Questions

1. What is the current level of knowledge among nurses in Kano State concerning chemotherapy side effect management?

2. What practices are currently employed by these nurses in managing chemotherapy-induced symptoms?

3. What gaps exist between the required and actual knowledge and practices among these nurses?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurses in Kano State possess inadequate knowledge regarding the management of chemotherapy side effects.

2. The current practices employed by these nurses in managing chemotherapy-induced symptoms are suboptimal.

3. There is a significant gap between the required and actual knowledge and practices among these nurses.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in oncology units across selected hospitals in Kano State. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires and observational checklists to assess knowledge and practices related to chemotherapy side effect management. Limitations may include self-reporting biases and the variability of practices across different institutions.

Definitions of Terms

• Chemotherapy Side Effects: Adverse reactions experienced by patients undergoing chemotherapy, including nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and immunosuppression.

• Oncology Nursing: A specialized field of nursing focused on the care of patients with cancer, encompassing treatment administration, symptom management, and patient education.
