Background of the Study
The psychosocial well-being of elderly patients is a critical aspect of holistic healthcare, encompassing mental health, social engagement, and emotional support. Geriatric nurses play a pivotal role in promoting this well-being by providing compassionate care, facilitating social interactions, and addressing mental health concerns. Their interventions can significantly enhance the quality of life for elderly individuals.
In Jigawa State, Nigeria, the elderly population is growing, leading to an increased demand for specialized geriatric care. However, the region faces challenges such as limited healthcare resources, inadequate training in geriatric nursing, and cultural factors that may affect the delivery of psychosocial care. Understanding the role of geriatric nurses in this context is essential for developing strategies to improve the psychosocial well-being of elderly patients.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of psychosocial care, there is limited research on the specific contributions of geriatric nurses to the psychosocial well-being of elderly patients in Jigawa State. Challenges such as insufficient training, high patient-to-nurse ratios, and cultural stigmas associated with mental health can impede the effectiveness of geriatric nursing interventions. Addressing these issues is crucial to enhance the quality of care provided to the elderly population.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the current practices of geriatric nurses in promoting the psychosocial well-being of elderly patients in Jigawa State.
2. To identify the challenges faced by geriatric nurses in delivering psychosocial care.
3. To propose strategies to enhance the role of geriatric nurses in improving the psychosocial well-being of elderly patients.
Research Questions
1. What are the current practices of geriatric nurses in promoting the psychosocial well-being of elderly patients in Jigawa State?
2. What challenges do geriatric nurses encounter in providing psychosocial care to elderly patients?
3. What strategies can be implemented to strengthen the role of geriatric nurses in enhancing the psychosocial well-being of elderly patients?
Research Hypotheses
1. Geriatric nurses in Jigawa State actively engage in practices aimed at promoting the psychosocial well-being of elderly patients.
2. Geriatric nurses face significant challenges that hinder their ability to provide effective psychosocial care.
3. Implementing targeted strategies can enhance the capacity of geriatric nurses to improve the psychosocial well-being of elderly patients.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on geriatric nurses working in healthcare facilities in Jigawa State, examining their roles in promoting the psychosocial well-being of elderly patients. Data will be collected through interviews, observations, and surveys. Limitations may include potential biases in self-reported data, variability in healthcare facility resources, and cultural factors influencing the perception of psychosocial care.
