Background of the Study
Family therapy is a form of psychotherapy that involves family members in the treatment process to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and support the patient's mental health. Nurse-led family therapy has emerged as an effective approach in mental health care, leveraging the unique position of nurses to engage with patients and their families. This approach can enhance treatment adherence, reduce relapse rates, and improve overall well-being.
In Taraba State, Nigeria, mental health services are often limited, and stigma associated with mental illness can hinder individuals from seeking help. Integrating nurse-led family therapy into mental health care could address these challenges by providing accessible and holistic support to patients and their families.
Statement of the Problem
Patients with mental illnesses in Taraba State face challenges such as limited access to specialized mental health services and societal stigma. These factors can negatively impact their well-being and recovery. Nurse-led family therapy offers a potential solution by involving family members in the care process, thereby enhancing support systems and improving patient outcomes. However, the effectiveness of this approach in Taraba State has not been extensively studied.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of nurse-led family therapy on the well-being of patients with mental illnesses in Taraba State.
2. To evaluate changes in family dynamics and support following nurse-led family therapy interventions.
3. To identify challenges and facilitators in implementing nurse-led family therapy in this context.
Research Questions
1. How does nurse-led family therapy affect the well-being of patients with mental illnesses in Taraba State?
2. What changes occur in family dynamics and support after participation in nurse-led family therapy?
3. What are the challenges and facilitators in implementing nurse-led family therapy in this setting?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurse-led family therapy significantly improves the well-being of patients with mental illnesses in Taraba State.
2. Participation in nurse-led family therapy leads to positive changes in family dynamics and support.
3. There are identifiable challenges and facilitators that influence the implementation of nurse-led family therapy in this context.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on patients with diagnosed mental illnesses receiving nurse-led family therapy in selected healthcare facilities in Taraba State. It will assess patient well-being, family dynamics, and implementation factors. Limitations may include variability in therapy delivery and potential biases in self-reported data.
