Background of the Study

Continuous Professional Development (CPD) plays a vital role in ensuring that nurses maintain and improve their clinical competencies. In a rapidly evolving healthcare environment, advancements in medical knowledge, technology, and patient care protocols necessitate ongoing education for nurses to provide high-quality care (Wilkinson et al., 2024). CPD encompasses structured learning activities such as workshops, seminars, certifications, and in-service training aimed at enhancing nurses' skills and knowledge (White et al., 2023).

In Nigeria, the demand for skilled healthcare professionals has increased due to the rising burden of diseases and changing patient needs. However, many nurses in tertiary hospitals face challenges in accessing continuous professional development opportunities due to financial constraints, lack of institutional support, and high workload demands (Afolabi et al., 2023). This is particularly evident in Zamfara State, where healthcare facilities often struggle with inadequate staffing, poor infrastructure, and limited training programs.

Despite these challenges, CPD is essential for improving nursing competencies, patient safety, and healthcare outcomes. Effective CPD programs equip nurses with updated knowledge on emerging diseases, medical technologies, and evidence-based practices, ensuring that they provide high-quality care (Johnson & Stewart, 2024). This study explores the impact of continuous professional development on clinical nursing skills in tertiary hospitals in Zamfara State and highlights strategies for enhancing CPD participation.

Statement of the Problem

The quality of healthcare services provided in tertiary hospitals depends significantly on the clinical skills of nurses. However, in Zamfara State, many nurses lack access to regular training programs, limiting their ability to stay updated on new medical advancements (Okafor et al., 2024). The absence of structured CPD programs contributes to skill gaps, reduced patient safety, and decreased healthcare efficiency.

Additionally, inadequate government support and institutional policies hinder the implementation of effective CPD programs in tertiary hospitals. Many nurses are unable to participate in training due to workload pressures, lack of financial incentives, and poor awareness of available opportunities (Kazeem et al., 2023). This study aims to examine the role of CPD in enhancing clinical nursing skills in Zamfara State tertiary hospitals and propose recommendations for improving CPD accessibility and effectiveness.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the impact of continuous professional development on clinical nursing skills in tertiary hospitals in Zamfara State.

2. To identify challenges faced by nurses in accessing CPD opportunities.

3. To recommend strategies for improving CPD participation and implementation.

Research Questions

1. How does continuous professional development influence clinical nursing skills in tertiary hospitals in Zamfara State?

2. What challenges do nurses face in accessing CPD programs?

3. What strategies can enhance CPD participation among nurses in Zamfara State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Continuous professional development significantly improves clinical nursing skills.

2. Limited access to CPD negatively affects the competency of nurses in tertiary hospitals.

3. Implementing structured CPD programs will enhance the clinical skills of nurses in Zamfara State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on tertiary hospitals in Zamfara State, examining the role of CPD in improving nursing skills. However, it does not include private hospitals or nurses working in primary and secondary healthcare facilities.
