Background of the Study
Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia are hypertensive disorders of pregnancy that pose significant risks to both mothers and infants. Pre-eclampsia is characterized by high blood pressure and proteinuria after the 20th week of pregnancy, while eclampsia is the progression of pre-eclampsia, leading to seizures. Both conditions are major contributors to maternal morbidity and mortality, particularly in low-resource settings. Early detection and management of these conditions are crucial for preventing complications such as organ failure, stroke, and death.
Nurses play a critical role in the identification, monitoring, and management of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia. They are responsible for regular blood pressure checks, urine protein assessments, and timely referral for medical interventions. However, nurses’ awareness and knowledge of these conditions can vary depending on their training, experience, and access to up-to-date clinical guidelines. At University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, a leading academic medical center, nurses’ awareness and management practices of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia need to be assessed to identify gaps and improve patient outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia are major causes of maternal mortality and morbidity, yet many nurses may not be fully aware of the best practices for their management. At University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, there may be variations in nurses’ awareness and management practices, potentially leading to delayed diagnosis or inadequate care. This study seeks to examine nurses’ awareness and management of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia and identify any shortcomings that could be addressed to enhance patient care.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess nurses’ awareness of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia at University of Abuja Teaching Hospital.
2. To evaluate nurses’ management practices for pre-eclampsia and eclampsia at University of Abuja Teaching Hospital.
3. To identify the challenges faced by nurses in managing pre-eclampsia and eclampsia and propose solutions to improve management.
Research Questions
1. How aware are nurses at University of Abuja Teaching Hospital of the symptoms and management of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia?
2. What management practices do nurses at University of Abuja Teaching Hospital follow for pre-eclampsia and eclampsia?
3. What challenges do nurses face in managing pre-eclampsia and eclampsia at University of Abuja Teaching Hospital?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses at University of Abuja Teaching Hospital have limited awareness of the symptoms and management of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia.
2. Nurses at University of Abuja Teaching Hospital do not consistently implement best practices for the management of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia.
3. Inadequate training and lack of resources are significant barriers to the effective management of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia by nurses at University of Abuja Teaching Hospital.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in obstetrics and gynecology departments at University of Abuja Teaching Hospital. The study may be limited by a lack of comprehensive data on nurses' training and the challenges in ensuring accurate self-reported practices.

• Pre-eclampsia: A hypertensive disorder in pregnancy characterized by high blood pressure and proteinuria, typically after the 20th week of pregnancy.
• Eclampsia: The progression of pre-eclampsia, marked by seizures and potentially fatal complications.
• Management Practices: The clinical actions taken by nurses to monitor and treat pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, including blood pressure management, medication administration, and patient education.
