Background of the Study

Psychiatric emergencies are acute situations in which individuals experience severe mental health crises, such as suicidal ideation, violent behavior, or a sudden psychotic episode. These emergencies are common in psychiatric hospitals and require rapid, effective interventions to ensure the safety and well-being of both patients and staff. Yaba Neuropsychiatric Hospital, one of Nigeria’s foremost psychiatric hospitals, serves as a primary care facility for individuals with severe psychiatric conditions. Nurses working in psychiatric settings are often the first point of contact for patients experiencing psychiatric emergencies. Their preparedness in handling such situations is essential to providing safe and effective care.

Nurses' preparedness for psychiatric emergencies is influenced by several factors, including their level of training, experience, and access to resources. However, many healthcare facilities face challenges such as insufficient specialized training for nurses, lack of effective communication strategies, and inadequate staff support during crises. This study will investigate the level of preparedness among nurses at Yaba Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Lagos, for responding to psychiatric emergencies, and examine the implications for patient care and safety.

Statement of the Problem

Psychiatric emergencies present significant challenges for healthcare providers, particularly nurses, who are often the first responders in such situations. Despite the importance of preparedness in managing psychiatric emergencies, there is a lack of research examining the preparedness of nurses in Nigerian psychiatric hospitals, including Yaba Neuropsychiatric Hospital. The study seeks to evaluate how well-prepared nurses are in managing psychiatric emergencies and to identify areas for improvement.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the preparedness of nurses at Yaba Neuropsychiatric Hospital for responding to psychiatric emergencies.

2. To examine the level of training and knowledge nurses have regarding psychiatric emergency care.

3. To identify the challenges nurses face when managing psychiatric emergencies at Yaba Neuropsychiatric Hospital.

Research Questions

1. How prepared are nurses at Yaba Neuropsychiatric Hospital to respond to psychiatric emergencies?

2. What level of training and knowledge do nurses at Yaba Neuropsychiatric Hospital possess regarding psychiatric emergency care?

3. What challenges do nurses face in managing psychiatric emergencies at Yaba Neuropsychiatric Hospital?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurses at Yaba Neuropsychiatric Hospital are inadequately prepared to manage psychiatric emergencies.

2. Nurses at Yaba Neuropsychiatric Hospital possess limited knowledge and training in psychiatric emergency care.

3. Barriers such as inadequate resources, lack of training, and insufficient staff contribute to the challenges nurses face in managing psychiatric emergencies.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the preparedness of nurses working at Yaba Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Lagos, for managing psychiatric emergencies. Limitations include the subjective nature of self-reported preparedness and the variability in training and experiences across different nurse cohorts.

Definitions of Terms
