Background of the Study
The use of mobile payment systems in universities has significantly transformed the way students and faculty manage financial transactions on campus. With the growing demand for convenience and efficiency, universities are increasingly adopting digital payment systems for services such as tuition fees, library fines, and on-campus purchases. However, the proliferation of mobile payment solutions has also raised concerns regarding the security of financial transactions, particularly the protection of sensitive data and prevention of fraud (Ibrahim et al., 2024).
Federal University, Lafia, Nasarawa State, like many other institutions, has recognized the need for a secure mobile payment system to ensure that users' financial transactions are protected from unauthorized access and cyberattacks. While existing mobile payment platforms provide convenience, they often lack the robust security measures necessary to safeguard personal and financial information. This study aims to design a secure mobile payment system tailored to the needs of university campuses, considering factors such as authentication, encryption, and transaction monitoring.
Statement of the Problem
Although Federal University, Lafia, has implemented mobile payment solutions for its campus, the system faces several security vulnerabilities, such as data breaches, unauthorized access, and fraud. These vulnerabilities raise concerns about the integrity of financial transactions, and there is an urgent need for a more secure mobile payment platform. This study aims to address these security gaps by designing a mobile payment system that ensures the protection of sensitive information and fosters trust among users.
Objectives of the Study
To design a secure mobile payment system that meets the financial transaction needs of Federal University, Lafia.
To incorporate advanced security measures, including authentication and encryption techniques, into the mobile payment system.
To assess the usability and effectiveness of the proposed secure mobile payment system within the university.
Research Questions
What are the security vulnerabilities associated with the current mobile payment system at Federal University, Lafia?
How can advanced security features, such as multi-factor authentication and data encryption, enhance the security of mobile payments?
What are the perceptions of users regarding the usability and security of the proposed mobile payment system?
Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the development of a secure mobile payment system for Federal University, Lafia, enhancing the security of financial transactions on campus. The findings will help protect sensitive user data, prevent fraud, and improve the overall user experience, ensuring that the university can effectively manage its financial systems in a secure and efficient manner.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to the design of a secure mobile payment system for Federal University, Lafia. It will focus primarily on security features and user experience, excluding other aspects of payment system infrastructure such as payment gateways. The study is also limited to the university's campus network.
