Background of the Study

The shift to online learning in universities has become more prominent, especially in the wake of the global pandemic, necessitating the development of reliable, secure, and efficient video conferencing systems. Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, like many other academic institutions, has increasingly relied on video conferencing platforms to facilitate learning and lectures in an online environment. However, the security of these platforms has raised concerns, particularly regarding data privacy, unauthorized access, and potential cyberattacks on students' and lecturers' personal data (Akinleye & Agboola, 2023).

Existing video conferencing systems often suffer from security vulnerabilities, such as inadequate encryption, session hijacking, and issues related to data leakage. The need for secure communication channels is paramount in an academic setting where confidential discussions, research presentations, and evaluations are routinely carried out online (Musa et al., 2024). Integrating robust security measures into video conferencing systems can significantly enhance the protection of sensitive information while ensuring the continuity of academic activities. This study focuses on designing a secure video conferencing system tailored for online learning at Federal University, Birnin Kebbi.

Statement of the Problem

Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, faces significant security challenges regarding its current video conferencing solutions, which may not fully protect the privacy of participants and the integrity of academic data. The university’s online learning environment is susceptible to cyberattacks, such as eavesdropping, unauthorized access to meetings, and data interception.

This study aims to address these vulnerabilities by designing a secure video conferencing system that incorporates encryption, authentication, and access control mechanisms, ensuring a safe and uninterrupted online learning experience.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify the security vulnerabilities present in current video conferencing platforms used at Federal University, Birnin Kebbi.

  2. To design a secure video conferencing system that addresses the security risks identified in the current platform.

  3. To implement and evaluate the effectiveness of the designed video conferencing system in safeguarding academic data and enhancing online learning.

Research Questions

  1. What are the key security vulnerabilities in the video conferencing systems currently used at Federal University, Birnin Kebbi?

  2. How can a secure video conferencing system be designed to mitigate these vulnerabilities?

  3. What are the perceived benefits of using a secure video conferencing system for online learning at Federal University, Birnin Kebbi?

Significance of the Study

The study will contribute to the enhancement of online learning at Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, by providing a secure and reliable video conferencing platform. The designed system will protect academic data, ensuring that students and staff can engage in online learning activities without the fear of data breaches or unauthorized intrusions.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to the design and implementation of a secure video conferencing system for use within Federal University, Birnin Kebbi. It does not cover other aspects of online learning systems or technologies beyond video conferencing.

Definitions of Terms

  • Video Conferencing: A method of conducting meetings or classes remotely using video and audio technology over the internet.

  • Encryption: The process of converting information into a secure format to prevent unauthorized access.

  • Authentication: A security process to verify the identity of users before granting access to the system.
