Background of the Study

The security of academic records is a significant concern for universities worldwide. Academic records, including transcripts, grades, and certificates, must be protected from unauthorized access, tampering, and fraud. Traditional methods of record-keeping often involve centralized databases, which can be vulnerable to hacking and manipulation (Ogunleye & Musa, 2024).

Blockchain technology offers a decentralized, immutable ledger that ensures the security and integrity of digital records (Olowu et al., 2023). In the context of academic institutions, blockchain can provide an efficient and transparent method for storing and verifying academic records, ensuring that only authorized individuals can make changes while maintaining an immutable history of all transactions.

This study explores the use of blockchain technology to secure academic records at Federal University, Gusau, assessing its potential benefits and challenges for implementation.

Statement of the Problem

Federal University, Gusau, faces challenges in securing academic records, including the risk of unauthorized alterations and fraud. The university relies on traditional record-keeping systems, which can be vulnerable to data breaches and human error. The lack of a secure and transparent system for managing academic records undermines the integrity and credibility of the institution's academic qualifications.

This study investigates the use of blockchain technology to enhance the security, transparency, and reliability of academic record management at Federal University, Gusau.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the current methods of managing academic records at Federal University, Gusau.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of blockchain technology in securing academic records.

  3. To propose a framework for integrating blockchain technology into the university’s academic record management system.

Research Questions

  1. What are the challenges faced by Federal University, Gusau, in securing academic records?

  2. How can blockchain technology enhance the security and transparency of academic records?

  3. What is the feasibility of implementing blockchain technology for academic record management at Federal University, Gusau?

Significance of the Study

This study will provide valuable insights into the application of blockchain technology for securing academic records. The findings will help Federal University, Gusau, implement a more secure, transparent, and efficient record-keeping system, enhancing the credibility of its academic qualifications.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to the use of blockchain technology for securing academic records at Federal University, Gusau, Zamfara State. It does not explore the broader use of blockchain in other administrative functions.
