Background of the Study

Email communication remains one of the most widely used means of digital correspondence in academic institutions. However, it is also a major attack vector for cyber threats such as phishing, malware distribution, and email spoofing (Adegbite et al., 2024). Higher institutions, including Federal University, Gusau, rely on email systems for internal and external communications, making it essential to secure email infrastructure against cyber threats.

Traditional email security techniques, such as spam filters and antivirus scanners, are often insufficient against sophisticated cyberattacks. The emergence of advanced security mechanisms, including end-to-end encryption, domain-based message authentication, and AI-driven threat detection, has significantly improved email security (Olaniyi & Yusuf, 2023). However, many universities still struggle to implement comprehensive email security solutions due to a lack of cybersecurity awareness and technical expertise.

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of existing secure email communication techniques in Federal University, Gusau. It will assess the university’s email security infrastructure, identify vulnerabilities, and recommend strategies for enhancing protection against cyber threats.

Statement of the Problem

Federal University, Gusau, has been experiencing an increase in phishing attacks and email-based threats, leading to compromised accounts and data breaches. Despite the availability of secure email communication techniques, many institutions fail to implement robust security measures effectively. Weak authentication mechanisms, unencrypted emails, and lack of user awareness contribute to security gaps that can be exploited by cybercriminals. This study seeks to analyze and recommend effective email security measures to mitigate these risks.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the current email security challenges in Federal University, Gusau.

  2. To analyze the effectiveness of existing secure email communication techniques.

  3. To propose an improved email security framework for enhanced protection against cyber threats.

Research Questions

  1. What are the key email security challenges in Federal University, Gusau?

  2. How effective are the existing secure email communication techniques in mitigating cyber threats?

  3. What measures can be adopted to enhance secure email communication in the university?

Significance of the Study

This study will help Federal University, Gusau, strengthen its email security framework, reducing the risks of phishing and cyberattacks. It will also provide recommendations for IT administrators on best practices for securing email communication.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on analyzing secure email communication techniques in Federal University, Gusau, Zamfara State. It does not cover general network security measures beyond email communication.

Definitions of Terms

  • Phishing: A cyberattack that tricks users into revealing sensitive information through fraudulent emails.

  • End-to-End Encryption (E2EE): A security mechanism that ensures only intended recipients can read an email.

  • Domain-Based Message Authentication (DMARC): An email authentication method to prevent spoofing and phishing attacks.
