Background of the Study

Hypertension, commonly referred to as high blood pressure, is a major public health issue, particularly among women. It is a leading risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), stroke, and kidney failure, and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2023), women are at a higher risk of developing hypertension due to factors such as hormonal changes, pregnancy, and lifestyle habits. In Nigeria, including Kano State, hypertension remains a major concern, contributing significantly to the burden of CVDs among women. Despite the availability of effective interventions for managing hypertension, many women remain undiagnosed, and even those diagnosed often fail to adhere to treatment regimens (Ajayi et al., 2024).

Nurses play an essential role in managing hypertension by educating patients, monitoring their blood pressure, advising on lifestyle modifications, and supporting adherence to prescribed medication regimens. Their knowledge and practices are crucial in ensuring effective hypertension management and preventing complications. However, there is limited research assessing the knowledge and practices of nurses in Kano State regarding the management of hypertension among women. This study, therefore, seeks to assess the current knowledge and practices of nurses in the management of hypertension in women and identify areas for improvement.

Statement of the Problem

Hypertension is a growing concern in Kano State, especially among women who face unique risk factors. While hypertension can be managed effectively with early detection, proper education, and medication adherence, there appears to be a gap in the knowledge and practices of nurses when it comes to managing hypertension in women. This gap could contribute to the high rates of uncontrolled hypertension and its associated complications in the state. The lack of research on nurses' knowledge and practices specifically in Kano State highlights the need for this study to assess how well nurses are equipped to manage hypertension in women and to identify areas for improvement in their practices.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess nurses’ knowledge of hypertension management in women in Kano State.
  2. To evaluate the practices of nurses in managing hypertension among women in Kano State.
  3. To recommend strategies to improve the management of hypertension among women through enhanced nursing knowledge and practices.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of nurses’ knowledge regarding hypertension management in women in Kano State?
  2. What are the current practices of nurses in managing hypertension among women in Kano State?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve nurses’ knowledge and practices in managing hypertension among women?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses in Kano State have a moderate to low level of knowledge regarding the management of hypertension in women.
  2. Nurses in Kano State face challenges in effectively managing hypertension among women due to limited knowledge and resources.
  3. Implementing targeted educational programs will improve nurses' knowledge and practices in managing hypertension among women.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the knowledge and practices of nurses in managing hypertension among women in healthcare facilities in Kano State. Limitations include the potential for biases in self-reported data and the variability of practices across different hospitals and healthcare settings.

Definitions of Terms

  • Hypertension: A condition in which the blood pressure is persistently elevated above normal levels, usually defined as a systolic blood pressure above 140 mmHg or a diastolic pressure above 90 mmHg.
  • Nurses’ Knowledge: The understanding and information that nurses have regarding the diagnosis, management, and prevention of hypertension, particularly in women.
  • Nurses’ Practices: The actions and strategies employed by nurses in the care and management of patients with hypertension, including medication administration, patient education, and lifestyle counseling.
