Background of the Study

Radiation therapy is a common and effective treatment modality for various cancers, where it is used to shrink tumors, alleviate symptoms, and potentially cure some forms of cancer. However, radiation therapy often comes with a range of complications, including skin reactions, fatigue, nausea, and long-term risks such as organ damage (Bassey et al., 2024). Nurses play a critical role in managing these complications by providing patient education, monitoring adverse effects, and offering supportive care. In Gombe State, where cancer treatment resources are limited and access to specialized care can be challenging, the preparedness of nurses to manage the complications of radiation therapy is crucial for ensuring optimal patient outcomes.

While radiation therapy has improved cancer survival rates, many healthcare professionals, including nurses, may not be fully prepared to manage the associated complications due to inadequate training, insufficient resources, and a lack of specific guidelines for radiation therapy care. This research seeks to assess how well nurses in Gombe State are equipped to handle the complexities of radiation therapy side effects and identify areas where improvement is needed.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the critical role nurses play in managing the side effects of radiation therapy, there is evidence suggesting that many nurses in Gombe State may not be adequately prepared to address these complications. This could be due to gaps in their training, limited access to specialized resources, and a lack of institutional support for professional development. Without the necessary preparation, nurses may struggle to manage the physical and emotional challenges faced by cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy.

Therefore, there is a need for an assessment of the preparedness of nurses in Gombe State to manage radiation therapy complications, with the aim of identifying training gaps and recommending improvements in nursing practice.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of preparedness of nurses in Gombe State in managing radiation therapy complications.
  2. To identify the factors that influence nurses’ preparedness in managing radiation therapy complications.
  3. To recommend strategies to improve nurses’ preparedness in managing radiation therapy complications.

Research Questions

  1. How prepared are nurses in Gombe State to manage the complications of radiation therapy?
  2. What factors influence nurses’ preparedness to manage radiation therapy complications?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve nurses’ preparedness in managing radiation therapy complications?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses in Gombe State are inadequately prepared to manage radiation therapy complications.
  2. Factors such as lack of training, limited resources, and insufficient institutional support negatively influence nurses’ preparedness in managing radiation therapy complications.
  3. Implementing targeted training programs and increasing resource availability will improve nurses’ preparedness in managing radiation therapy complications.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will assess the preparedness of nurses in managing radiation therapy complications in healthcare facilities in Gombe State. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and variability in nursing practices across different hospitals and facilities.

Definitions of Terms

  • Radiation Therapy: A cancer treatment that uses high doses of radiation to kill or damage cancer cells.
  • Radiation Therapy Complications: Adverse effects that occur as a result of radiation treatment, including skin reactions, fatigue, and other long-term risks.
  • Preparedness: The extent to which nurses are equipped, trained, and supported to effectively manage the complications of radiation therapy.
