Background of the Study
Cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally, with significant public health implications, especially in low- and middle-income countries like Nigeria. Early detection of cancer has been widely recognized as a key factor in improving survival rates and reducing the burden of the disease on healthcare systems (Ogunleye et al., 2024). Oncology nurses play a vital role in the early detection of cancer by educating the public, advocating for screenings, and providing patient care that helps identify early warning signs of cancer. Their unique position within the healthcare system allows them to directly interact with patients, ensuring that high-risk individuals are referred for timely diagnostic testing.
In Borno State, the prevalence of cancer has been rising, but there is still a lack of widespread awareness about the importance of early detection and prevention. The role of oncology nurses in this process is critical as they are often the first point of contact for patients in healthcare settings. Despite this, there is limited research on the specific contributions of oncology nurses to early cancer detection in Borno State. Understanding their role and identifying the challenges they face is essential for developing effective cancer prevention and early detection programs.
Statement of the Problem
While early detection of cancer can significantly improve patient outcomes, there are several barriers to its achievement in Borno State. These barriers include a lack of awareness about cancer risk factors, limited access to diagnostic services, and cultural stigmas associated with cancer. Oncology nurses are central to overcoming these challenges through education, early screening programs, and advocacy. However, the extent of their involvement in early cancer detection in Borno State and the challenges they face in this role have not been adequately explored.
This study seeks to fill this gap by investigating the role of oncology nurses in promoting early cancer detection and identifying the barriers that hinder their effectiveness.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will investigate the role of oncology nurses in early cancer detection within healthcare settings in Borno State. Limitations may include variability in nursing practices across different hospitals and potential biases in self-reported data from oncology nurses.
