Background of the Study
Diabetes mellitus is a major public health concern globally, with a rising prevalence in Nigeria. Effective management of diabetes requires continuous monitoring, lifestyle modifications, and strict adherence to medication. Clinical nurses play a critical role in the management of diabetic patients by providing patient education, monitoring blood glucose levels, and preventing complications (Eze et al., 2023). However, the ability of nurses to deliver optimal care is often hindered by systemic challenges such as inadequate training, lack of resources, and high patient loads (Adeyemi & Mohammed, 2024).
In Kebbi State, the increasing prevalence of diabetes has put additional pressure on healthcare facilities, many of which struggle with limited staff and medical supplies (Ogunleye & Yusuf, 2024). A significant number of patients lack proper knowledge about diabetes management, leading to poor adherence to treatment plans and frequent hospital visits due to complications such as diabetic foot ulcers, neuropathy, and cardiovascular diseases (Bello & Sanni, 2023). Nurses, as frontline caregivers, face difficulties in providing adequate diabetes care due to limited time, poor infrastructure, and cultural beliefs that influence patient compliance.
Despite the critical role of nurses in diabetes management, there is limited research on the challenges they encounter in Kebbi State. Understanding these challenges is essential for developing strategies to enhance diabetes care and improve patient outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
The burden of diabetes continues to rise in Kebbi State, yet clinical nurses face numerous challenges in providing effective care. Many healthcare facilities lack essential diabetes management tools such as glucometers, insulin supplies, and continuous education programs for both patients and nurses. Furthermore, the high patient-to-nurse ratio limits the ability of nurses to provide individualized care, resulting in poor treatment adherence and increased complications (Umar & Ali, 2023).
Cultural beliefs and misconceptions about diabetes further complicate care delivery, with some patients relying on traditional medicine instead of prescribed treatment plans (Okonkwo & Garba, 2024). The lack of structured diabetes education programs within hospitals also hampers nurses' ability to counsel patients effectively. Despite these known challenges, there is insufficient research on the specific difficulties nurses face in diabetes care in Kebbi State. Addressing this knowledge gap is crucial for improving diabetes management and patient health outcomes.

Research Hypotheses

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on clinical nurses in public hospitals and health centers in Kebbi State, examining the challenges they encounter in managing diabetes. Limitations include variations in hospital resources, differences in nurse experience levels, and potential underreporting of patient compliance issues. The findings may not be applicable to private healthcare facilities or regions with better diabetes management programs.
