Background of the Study

Cardiac arrest is a critical medical emergency that requires immediate intervention to prevent death or permanent disability. Women often experience different symptoms and warning signs compared to men, leading to delays in recognition and treatment (World Health Organization, 2024). Prompt and effective response by nurses significantly improves survival rates and reduces complications associated with cardiac arrest (Aliyu & Usman, 2023).

Nurses play a crucial role in responding to cardiac arrest through early recognition of warning signs, initiating cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and coordinating emergency interventions (Bello et al., 2023). In Gombe State, where access to specialized cardiac care is limited, nurses' preparedness in handling cardiac arrest cases among women is essential for reducing mortality. However, there is a lack of research assessing the knowledge, skills, and readiness of nurses in managing cardiac arrest in the region.

This study aims to evaluate nurses' preparedness in handling cardiac arrest among women in Gombe State, focusing on training, clinical experience, and the availability of necessary resuscitation equipment.

Statement of the Problem

Cardiac arrest remains a major cause of sudden death among women, yet many cases are poorly managed due to delays in recognizing symptoms and inadequate emergency response (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2023). Nurses are often the first healthcare providers to attend to cardiac arrest patients, making their preparedness crucial for survival outcomes.

However, studies suggest that many nurses lack adequate training and confidence in performing life-saving interventions such as CPR and defibrillation (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). In Gombe State, where healthcare facilities may be under-resourced, it is unclear whether nurses have the necessary skills and equipment to effectively manage cardiac arrest cases among women. Without proper assessment, gaps in preparedness may persist, leading to poor patient outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of preparedness of nurses in handling cardiac arrest among women in Gombe State.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of training programs in improving nurses’ response to cardiac arrest emergencies.
  3. To identify challenges faced by nurses in managing cardiac arrest cases.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of preparedness of nurses in handling cardiac arrest among women in Gombe State?
  2. How effective are training programs in enhancing nurses' ability to respond to cardiac arrest emergencies?
  3. What are the challenges faced by nurses in managing cardiac arrest cases?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses in Gombe State have varying levels of preparedness in handling cardiac arrest among women.
  2. Regular training programs improve nurses’ ability to manage cardiac arrest emergencies effectively.
  3. Limited access to training and emergency equipment hinders nurses' ability to handle cardiac arrest cases efficiently.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in emergency departments, intensive care units, and general wards in selected hospitals in Gombe State. Limitations may include variations in training programs and the availability of emergency equipment across healthcare facilities.

Definition of Terms

  • Cardiac Arrest: A sudden loss of heart function that requires immediate medical intervention to prevent death.
  • Nurses’ Preparedness: The level of knowledge, training, and readiness of nurses to handle medical emergencies such as cardiac arrest.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): A life-saving technique used to restore breathing and circulation in cardiac arrest patients.
