Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) account for a significant proportion of morbidity and mortality among women worldwide. Despite advancements in healthcare, many women, particularly in rural areas, do not seek timely medical attention for cardiovascular issues due to various social, cultural, and economic barriers (World Health Organization, 2024). The reluctance to seek cardiovascular care can lead to delayed diagnoses, poor disease management, and increased mortality rates (Aliyu & Usman, 2023).
Several factors influence women’s health-seeking behavior, including healthcare accessibility, financial constraints, cultural beliefs, and lack of awareness about cardiovascular diseases (Bello et al., 2023). In Gombe State, where healthcare infrastructure is limited and cultural norms often restrict women's decision-making regarding their health, understanding the barriers to cardiovascular health-seeking behavior is crucial in developing effective interventions (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024).
Despite global efforts to improve cardiovascular health, little research has been conducted on the specific challenges women in Gombe State face in accessing heart-related medical care. This study aims to examine these barriers and recommend strategies to enhance cardiovascular health-seeking behavior among women in the region.
Women in Gombe State are at high risk of cardiovascular diseases due to prevalent risk factors such as hypertension, obesity, and diabetes. However, many do not seek medical attention until the disease has progressed to an advanced stage, leading to poor health outcomes and increased mortality (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2023).
Barriers such as limited healthcare access, financial constraints, cultural restrictions, and low health literacy contribute to this issue. Understanding these factors is essential for developing targeted interventions that promote early diagnosis and treatment. Without addressing these challenges, cardiovascular disease will continue to impose a heavy burden on women in Gombe State.
This study will focus on women in Gombe State, exploring their health-seeking behaviors and identifying barriers to accessing cardiovascular healthcare. Limitations may include difficulties in obtaining self-reported data due to social stigmas or reluctance to discuss personal health issues.
